Case 1070 powershift no reverse

Hi, I have a Case 1070 that I recently picked up. Everything was going good on it until the other day when I was moving some bales. I was in 1st gear 3rd range and drove about 100ft, it started to feel like the transmission was slipping, like I was driving in mud. I stopped the tractor, and put it in neutral for a few minutes to get out and do a quick walk around. After I got back in the cab, I have no reverse, when I put the tractor into reverse, it doesn't even attempt to move, and bogs the engine down until I press in the clutch, I haven't tried going forward with it any more for fear I may screw some more stuff up. Any ideas on what I should be checking??? Thanks.

We will need more details to give a opinion on the problem as it could be several different things from what you described. If you are unfamiliar with how to test the systems perhaps ask around to see if someone local might be able to. You did the right thing, do not operate tractor in a gear that the engine bogs down. Doing so can damage disc's in the power shift. Rod.

I agree with Rod, pressure gages and someone who knows how the range powershift works are invaluable at this point. There are a couple possibilities but not enough info.

I don't have the pressure guages available to do the pressure tests, but after doing a little more research, I went out a couple days later and went through the power shift ranges in neutral and watched the trans pressure guage on the dash when I shifted. It would dip down a bit on shifts but then jump right back to the middle in the green. I gave reverse one more try and now the tractor is backing up again. Could this point to a valve that was stuck?? If so, would a fluid change and cleaning the valves clear that up???

That would be a place to start, the valve should be removed and carefully cleaned taking each spool out and cleaning the bores by putting a screw in the threaded hole provided. A couple cans of brake kleen spraying the bore while moving the spool back and forth till they are free. Most times the valves are fouled by lack of maintanance so it is necessary to change the trans and steering filters and making sure the relief valve is in place. I have to keep repeating that as it is a common problem'

Anytime you notice any irregulrity in shifting you should stop running it immediately and fix or have fixed, Sad to say but repairs can exceed the worth of the tractor.
