I have a case 680c backhoe. The backhoe has been sitting for many years, I have just finished fixing the hydraulics now my problem is with the hydrostatic transmission. When I first start up the tractor it will move forward and backwards fine but only for a short time 1 or 2 minutes, I then have to shut it off wait 30 seconds only, and start it up again and it will move forward and backward but only for a couple of minutes. I have drained the fluid and replaced it. Fluid was a nasty milky lumpy stuff. The backhoe was sitting for about 5 years which before that it worked fine. Is there a filter or screen that I could replace or clean?

its been 40 plus years since I serviced a 680C,, it will have a trans filter not sure if it is by the trans or mounted by the engine, is the oil foamy when it quits? or still milky/dirty? sounds like it may be covering the suction to the pump and you are loosing clutch pressure, again it has been many years but does it have a pan on the shuttle you can remove and clean/check the screen

I think Tom is right. There is a cylindrical screen that lies in the bottom of that shuttle housing. It runs from front to back and you remove a pipe plug then pull it out and clean it.

It doesn't have a pan but it does have an access plate bolted on the right side of the transmission. I made a quick look and didn't see any filter, I will look better this week end and I didn't look at the fluid. I will do that this week end also. Is there a way or a fluid to flush the transmission?

Thank you for the help.

Philip

The transmission screen was clogged. Cleaned it up and backhoe works fine.
Thank you guys so much. I finally got an easy fix for something.
The fluid was a little milky still hopefully this second drain and refill will fix that.
