730 Steering Bushings

Just doing a little research. My 730 (actually a 732 wide front western model) has tremendous slack in the upper steering shaft which makes a normally hard steering tractor even worse. The top bushing appears to be fine but the bottom end of the shaft is inside the casting and can't really see it without disassembling. According to the online parts page from CIH the upper and lower bushings are identical, same part number (A21367). Just wondering if anybody else has ever had to replace this bushing and how big a job it is.

Replaced both bushings on mine. Made it steer a lot easier. Took some time but nothing super difficult. I believe I pulled the steering shaft pedestal and I also replaced the steering rod U-Joints while I was at it. I think I got new U-Joints from local parts store. Bushings were from Case and they are made with two metal bushings with a rubber sleeve between them.

I like the idea of the greaseable brass bushings. I expect the parts from CIH will be outrageously expensive like they always are. Hope I dont have to pull the steering wheel as it is already cracked.

Ralph;

The bad news is that you will have to pull the steering wheel. The lower part of the shaft is integral with the u-joint yoke. Unbolt the top section casting and lift off the shaft. Bushings are in this casting.

(quoted from post at 02:50:38 06/07/13) When I did mine, I just used a brass bushing, and put in two grease zerks on the cast pedestel. Bruce
that's what I did on my 1030, bought bushings from a supply house for a fraction of CNH's price, then drilled the housing for grease fittings. Also, if you need to replace the bearing balls at the shaft rides in, I used sealed ball bearings with a locking collar. You have to grind the inside of the bearing housing a little bit with a die grinder so they fit properly but they work nice.

Thanks for all the replies. I guess I know a little more about the job ahead now. I might just put it off til winter when the tractor is not in use.
