You mentioned locating and checking the 4 cab mounts. To take this a bit further, take a close look at the framework of the cab floor around each mount. I have seen breaks in the struts in this area. If there are breaks around the mounts, you will have to find a way to weld reinforcing to the cab framework. As for the loose or stripped bolts it could only be an issue if the whole bellhousing is loose and working. If that is the situation, you better cure it soon.
It sounds like the previous owner was a real cob-job mechanic, and you are having to deal with the dirty end of the cob.
