CASE 310 gas Camshaft Gear/or Cam

I have a 310, and it was running fine, put in the shed, went back 1 month later and it did not run. We checked everything out(I will Make it brief, everything...) and could not find anything wrong. But when we checked out the rotor in the distributer, the rotor was not turning. The gear on the cam was not turning. There was never a sign of engine failure (Bank-Pop etc.) THE QUESTION IS ???
Does the camshaft have a woodruff key ? have they ever been known to have slipped? and has that ever happened before ?? If Not ! How could the cam shaft just sit and then break in half? (IF that is the case.) If anyone could answer PLEASE reply here or at [email protected] We would really appreciate it as we/I restored this 310 25 years age when I was 50 and that was too long ago to remember details like that, or have never seen this problem happen in the past. Thank you in advance. Ed

Did you pull the distributor and check the drive gear? Not all that uncommon for the pin to fail and the gear to end up in the crankcase.

When I pulled the dist. all looked fine on it...With a flashlight looking into the galley where the cam is , the cam was not turning when the engine was cranking over.
I wonder if the woodruff key slipped ? or if it has a key ?
This all happened after I parked the tractor.
It was running, parked, and just quit ??
