The wheels on my Chevrolet Limited Eagle Edition pick up are corroding in places. It looks like there is a coating of plastic on the wheels that is coming off in places too. How can I bring these wheels back to looking good? Will blasting them and painting them work? Can I paint over the plastic if I don't get it all off?

Some of the aluminum wheels are polished and clear coated from the factory. A good body shop should be able to give you advice on how to fix them. Let us know what they say. I have thought about clear coating the 24.5's on my "truck".
 
We tried that on our aluminum semi rims. To see if they would stay looking nice and polished, after about the 4th wash job, the power washer blew it all off, I think its because there's just not enough texture.
 
Thanks for the info. I guess I will just have to carry a little polish with me in the truck. That will give me something to do while waiting in line. FYI it is a 69 Diamond Reo with 247K on it. It hauls Case tractors too.
 
My boys and I have done quite a few sets of chev aluminum wheels. Blast them with the tires right on them, then break the outside bead, push the tire back and mask, paint your favorite color silver with base coat and clear them, remove the mask and air them back up. Clean and easy and they don't quite look factory but they look really nice. We blast with fine silica and stay back to get a nice even pattern, blow clean with air and paint. They are plenty rough to hold paint good. Be sure and get all the plastic off or it will throw off the look of the new paint. The blasting will not hurt or blemish the tires.
 
Yup that's what we do, I like to use the mothers aluminum polish, it seems to really get the shine, and seems to last a while, we usually polish them twice a year.
