Sight glass removal

Been reading all the horror stories from you guys on removing the sight glass on 70 series tractors. Wanted to remove the ones on my 970 and got nowhere trying to use pliers and wrapping with leather.

Solution was to take a 7/8 inch socket and make a socket to fit the glass. I first aprayed the area with spray grease for a release agent. Then mixed up some quick setting epoxy and after putting a runner disc for a plug in the bottom of the socket, I filled the socket with the epoxy and pressed it over the glass till it hardened, forming to the glass. After the epoxy hardened, I was able to remove the sight gauge with breaker bar and a little pressure on the socket it came right out.

Only thing I would do different is use a spring loaded rod like a shower curtain rod to hold it while it herdened. Seemed like forever holding it by hand.

I did something similar with a small squirt of spray-foam insulation inside a socket. I wedged a stick in between the wheel and socket and just walked off and left it for a few hours to do other things. The spray-foam had hardened enough in about three hours that the glass came right out. Just be sure to use a clean socket that you don"t mind leaving some residue in because that stuff is hard to clean out. Whatever works is what I"ll use!!!

has anyone ever used the engine dipstkin the tranny fill hole ,,seems to me on level thetranny would be full at 2 inches above the engine full markon my 1070 ..........

That would work on the earliest 70 series, but the fuel tank is in the way to mount a dipstick on the filler cap. A light chain for a dipstick works, but hard to mark. The later 70 series is a little different, and the filler tube has a 90 degree bend in it above the oil level. I tried all that before I just pulled the sight glass and cleaned them.
