Hi Loren,
If I understand you correctly from the archives, to change out the brake shaft seal on the big 400 into the 30 series. I want to leave the diff carrier/brake pad plate fastened and go inbetween it & the shaft to remove old seal and cover splines to install new one the same way correct? I have the parts breakdown but hadn't read the service manual yet. For all the Cases we have this is the first one I've had to do:) Thanks

Brad

You have the details correct, as long as there is no play in the diff. carrier shaft, and side gears. If there is looseness in this area you will need to pull the PTO housing to acess the ring and pinion and first preload the diff. shaft and then remove and install the quill shims from side to side to get proper gear lash on the ring and pinion. Should be about .002-.004", but if there is ware that can be hard to measure.
Pry out the old seals if things are OK and protect the new seal with something over the brake disc splines. Tape, thin plastic, or peice of tin, and lube will work. Case dealers had a seal thimbell that slid over the splines and then you slid the seal over that. Hope this answers your question. My case friends may also have further advise.
