COM/PS question for you experts, long winded.

OK I have bad knees. Service connected so I'm fighting with VA about replacement. My left knee is worst and most often I wear a metal hinged brace on it. This past Monday I spent about 7 hours blowing snow with my 1206 IH. Lot of places I had to go a few feet and clutch and let the blower catch up. Some drifts wer 5' deep. The next day I was on my crutches again. Just too much for the ole knee.

Now I'm in the market for another tractor. So I'm wondering about the COM and PS tractors.

On the COMs, can you shift from forward to reverse without clutching?

I've run a 970 PS but that was tillage and haying. So can you use the ps like a shuttle?

Thanks

Rick

You still have to clutch it but the pedal pushes much
easier,also I had a knee replacement ,I would recommend
going to a specialist and forget the va

No, you have to clutch with Case PS or COM. I have both. However, both are easy and fast to clutch and reverse. The COM is a dump valve pedal and will not be hard on your knee. Riding the clutch on a Case PS with PTO engaged is hard on it. The only older tractor that I know of that will work for you without clutching is an IH hydro. I have a 656 hydro and a 3488. You should expect to have to go thru the hydro when you buy one (about $8K) so you have to buy them with that in mind

I have run both 830 COM, and 2090 PS on the snow blower. I will tell you my experience with both. Both have clutch pedals that push really easy. 830 has a nice slow reverse, but at 65 HP it is a little short on snort for a snow blower. Personally I do not prefer the PS on the snow blower. Reverse in each gear is the same speed as 3rd PS. Reverse is to fast, and to go forward while empty you need to power shift up to 3rd to go the same speed as reverse. Then manually PS down before pushing the clutch pedal in to go to reverse. I prefer my 970 8 speed myself. Low reverse is a good speed, and 4th to move ahead empty. But that is back to a hard pushing clutch pedal. Trying to give you a straight shot, but take it for what it is worth. DK

I , also , have had a left knee replaced 6 yrs ago but NOT by VA hosp. Absolutely no pain since and I can clutch all day with it without worry. Get the knee done right and keep the tractor.m Make sure and do the PT afterwords the way they say and don"t get lazy about it. It hurts but is worth it. Take your hydrocodone right before pt.

Get that knee done! Get that ol county svc agent to get results, or try the DAV, VFW or Am Leg sev reps. They DO work. I had my right knee done 5 years ago at age 63, svc connected like you, and it"s the best thing I"ve ever done. Procrastinated for a year at least but very happy today.

OK thanks guys. That stiff clutch on the 1206 is bad. I wasn't riding it. I'd back up till the tractor bogged down some, clutch and shift to N let it catch up, Back in R and move another 20 feet. I had 7 drives I did in a 8 miles area. All relitives and 2 close family freinds.

I've thought about the hydros but really don't want to spend 10K for a tractor I have to dump another 8K into.

I don't have a choice. I'm retired Army with service connected disabilities. Have to go with VA. They want me to drop 30 pounds before they will replace my knee. I'm 6'5" and about 280 pounds. Wish I could afford to go to a civilian doc.

First of all get knee fixed. Second IH had a hydralic asist option available for the 1066. One of them could be installed on a 1206. Just some food for thought

Rick, when you go to the Dr. again find an orthopesist who will discuss a micro fracture on your knee to see if you may be a candidate. My wife had this done in lieu of knee replacement. This technique uses your body"s stem cells to rebuild the cartilage in your knee(s). This is a new ortgoscopic surgery technique and a lot less radical surgery.

Can be done as day surgery and recuperation is shorter.

JIM that would be nice but finiancally I have to go with VA and what they will do. Most often anything new takes years before VA is authorized to use it. They claim cost and they are most likely right. I don't think they allow the docs to go and get updated training very often.

Thats sounds like a great blower tractor to put about 100 hp in front of a COM. Now the challenge would be not to fry the PTO clutch.

Rick - I know where you are coming from. My left hip & both knees are about shot. 100% disabled Vet also (Welcome home brother!) I have trouble getting on my kubota and my 310 with a loader to climb over. After about an hour I some times need help getting off. The VA says my legs are not "that bad"maybe they have to fall of to be "that bad". I did buy some time by using instaflex for the last 2 years ( I walk better even 2 years later) Some times I am pain free till I over do it. Any it took a couple months on it B4 I noticed any difference. Maybe this would help you (there is a way to get a price break -e-mail me. Good luck Mr Bill

Wow sorry to here about your leg problems thats the sad part for all of us just part of getting old it all hurts but you are so lucky to have and IH 1206 those are the best looking tractor in my opinion, hope your knee gets better.

Bill thanks. YOur email isn't showing up but mine is rlkfam at yahoo. I'd love to be pain free but that isn't in the cards right now. It's managable but it's there.

Kevin. At 57 I don't think I'm that old. But when yer clutch knee requires a brace and cane most of the time a chutchs at other times it can be a real problem.

Now the up side is that last night and this morning my wife and I did a little looking on line. She's thinking that we should break our no borrow rule and get me a Versatile bi-directional before next winter hits!!! I don't know though. It would be used for seeding round bales, picking them out of the field and running a haybine or round baler. I just gotta get over the idea of borrowing 20-30K or more.
