Of Eggs. My wifes Girls as she calls them have really picked up in production the past couple weeks. Longer days and lack of snow they are free to roam about for now and do their chicken thing. As soon as the frost comes out of the ground back in the pen they go. Those scratching machines can make holes in a hurry if they are allowed too. With an ample supply of fresh eggs, those from the store just don't cut it anymore, and the old hens make great chicken noodle soup. Rod.

I've been thinking about getting some pullets but my wife keeps dispelling the idea. Back in my younger years I learned the value of a dollar with chickens. When I was 6 or 7 grandpa bought me a half dozen pullets and taught me how to get a hen to sit a nest, I think we had around 60 chickens in the end when I was about 12. I sold eggs to the old neighbor ladies and paid for feed for the hens. The extra money went into a billfold in grandpas end table in the living room. He never let me get into that money, he would buy little treats and things I wanted within reason but told me to save my money. He would let me carry by billfold when we went to town. Grandpa passed away the spring I turned 12, we had been planning to buy a shotgun with the money he had helped me save from egg sales. The day of his funeral dad took me to the sporting goods store and I picked out the new shotgun that grandpa and I had dreamed about. He's been gone along time now but I haven't forgotten that lesson.

Pickled eggs.......deviled eggs....70 degree day, CASE of Grain Belts, one of those girls on the grill. That sounds like a good time.

Eric,
That is too funny. Better stop there or I will end up picking you up and we both will be heading to Rod's Case cave with the mentioned items on the menu. Yummy! That could be fun.

Nice story. I used to take care of the family chickens when I was around 12. I did have some guinea fowl around 10 years ago, when I lived at a different location. We had Bantams and larger breeds. I have been wanting to get some chickens, but the wife is not fond of the idea either. My dad used to tell the story of when he was growing up during the Great Depression someone broke into their chicken house and took their chickens. I think they may have put a lock on it after that. The only other chicken thief I ever heard of was Snuffy Smith (comic strip).
