Case plans before merger

Thought this would be a interesting topic. What did case have in the works before the merger? I remember seeing somewhere about a "worm" like Case 4wd tractor. Interesting stuff.

Thanks in advance

Yes,they had a new large horsepower tractor on the drawing board, the model escapes me,but instead rushed the "4994" in,as other companies were intro ing that horsepower.
When IHC came into the picture, the big tractor drawing were pushed into the garbage

CASE had the 96 series row crops in the works. These had a 24 spd powershift transmission (94 series carryover) 8.3 litre CDC engine and all new 2-door cab.

These were shelved when the IH MAGNUM plans and running prototpyes were shown to Management & Engineering.

So what you are saying here is that Case ag equipment really went away at the purchase and IH was just rebranded. Is this more or less correct? I guess then true Case tractors are now all construction equipment.

Jim

I remember reading almost 90% of the magnum was IH Only case things I can think of inherited in the magnums is the intelligence center, and the silent guardian cab.

No not so quick. Case/Cummins "Consolidated Diesel Co." supplied the engines. The IH designed Magnum as it would be named after the merger was from the engine back, but there was strong influance from Case engineering with such items as the front axle, hood, side console controls, and revamping of the basic IH cab. The Magnums looked like a Case tractor, rather than an IH.
It would have been interesting to see how Case would have fared with the CDC engines and RPS64 tranny. Case would have had to beef up the RPS64 to obtain the reliability that was built into the Magnum trans and rearend, by IH. Case had already aquired Steiger, prior to IH and was experimenting with the CDC engines in the David Browns.

Tennico Just went out and bought Steiger Tractor Co. Problem with big 4WD tractors solved. There was an anti trust suit filed against the Steiger buyout, but the ruleing went in the favor of Case.

970 what you have read is pretty much true case had fell so far behind in engineering of tractors and equipment along the way and there will be a new book coming out this summer by and I can't remember his name off hand that will clear this up if check on the IH site you can get a better understanding about this Loren is very good on this subject but there a some that just can't let it go to IH.

Thanks Loren and Rich, glad to have so many of you all on this forum with an inside look at the process as it was. I have learned so much about the history of Case I never knew before. Glad Case wasn't totally taken over by IH management. Both companies made some good equipment but I am just partial to Case.

Jim

I believe Steiger was purchased a couple years after Case and IH were combined as I went to the first service meetings they offered up in Fargo. I could look up my old training manuals for the date. Case was pretty set on the solid frame design but sales of large 4 wh drive were pretty slow so they bought Steiger. Made them red for CaseIH dealers and green for Steiger dealers for first few years.

You sure about the cab? There are a few 88 series experimental tractors with Magnum style cabs.

Pete,
I'm not sure how long that the Steiger aquisition was tied up in court, but I believe the buyout started before the Case IH merger. Perhaps the conclusion was post merger. My memory is vague on the timing, but I know Case wanted all of it's dealers to document all our issues with the 90 series 4WDs for their court case to demomstrate that they needed to replace the ridgid frame concept with the Steiger design.
Sounds wierd for a company to ask dealers for negatives, but I remember the senario. Perhaps the other old Case dealers might remember this also. We had sold a 4490 to a customer. It had a mind of it's own. We had Case service reps at our dealership multipal times, to solve problems. Finally we delivered the customer a new 4490 that we had provided him, out of our new tractor inventory, while the original one was broken down. Our service staff and company service reps tore out the whole electrical system and replaced it with new, and it was resold under a special program that Case set up. It did work as designed after that.

I guess you have a lot more information than I have so have no reason to doubt what you say. Speaking of having a mind of it's own. We sold one 4494 that did also, at least it seemed that way to me. Could not convince customer's hired operators to be darn sure the steering selector switch was in front steer positon when driving down the road. It liked to take off once in a while and head for the side of the road. I think I traced it down to a loose set screw on steering sensor if I remember correctly. It was an experience for me not being familiar with Case equipment. Had another 4494 that the pto speed was incorrect. I checked it out against another one that was correct but we transfered it out to another dealer who needed one so never pinned it down. Noticed it when on the dyno so started checking pto rpm against engine rpm's. It was a real challenge working on so many different models of tractors when I had enough problems with the red ones the way it was.

Wow guys, excellent responses. Learned a lot, it's very interesting to me hearing about the behind the scene tractors, that were eventually crumpled up and thrown away..
I like the IH pics, amazing how similar it was.

Thanks,
Kenny F

CASE management was firmly incharge in almost every facet of the new company. The story of 57? IH vice presidents being brought on is TOTAL LIES. I don't believe IH had 57 vice presdents in their entire history.

The CASE management team made some good and some bad decisions, but they had to live with thier outcome. Looking back, the merger COULD HAVE been much more sucessful, but personal EGO and vendetta played a role in many behind the scenes activities. Only recently have some of them been revealed.

The magnum tractor is mostly IH execpt for the case rear wheels, lighting package, hood and side panels, dash, cdc engine and front weights. The cab is the IH cab with the door opening the correct way and the front axle is IH. A retired IH rep told me the 18 speed powershift was supposed to be introduced In the early 80s but IH was out of money and could not finnish the R&D to make it a full powershift. Case came in and saw what IH had and finnished the job. International Harvester was purchased in 1984 and Steiger was purchased in 1986. The magnum is the best tractor ever made but it took a case engineer to get it refined so farmers would buy it.

If I'm not mistaken, they had a colored Case Eagle in the steering wheel, that kinda says who was in charge.
Although around our way, there wasnt many Case people on the territory,as IHC had several.IHC had a full line, and Case had been stripped down to what they called the "Tractor Specialist's".
Jim Kettleson who was in charge of Tenneco, had a special love for Case,as he worked there in his early days, and I was told by Jim and saw it in pictures,he had a Case Eagle in his Houston office
