580D - low RPM only

I have a 580D that has been sitting most of the winter. I tried to use it yesterday and it starts fine but the engine won't accelerate above idle.

Sounds like time to repair the injection pump IF flow is OK to the pump inlet, meaning no blocked filters or tank obstruction. Weight retainer ring in pump may be breaking down, then bits will plug up return fitting and return line back to tank. Test with timing cover screws loose allowing fuel to laek out. If engine speeds up OK then pump needs repair due to ring failure. DO NOT keep cleaning the fitting and think all is well. You will risk doing much more expensive damage than you have now if ring is bad.
