Case Nutty 1660- Question for you.

You being an old Case man, figured you might have an idea on this. We have a Case 2290 that leaks oil from the end cap on the starter. Started doing it several years ago. Two different mechanics have had it apart several times and have replaced the seals in it. Put it back on and within two or three hours of running, oil starts coming out of the end cap. Have checked the transmission breather and it is not plugged. Must be a pressure build up somewhere around the flywheel, but we can't figure where and why it would push oil thru the starter case and out the end. Ever had that happen on any of your tractors? Thanks.

have had starters leak but my starter guy has always stopped the problem, I know he uses a certain seal on the convertor/powershift starters, are they rebuilding the starter completely or just replacing the seals? may be bad bushings ect taking the seals back out, just some thoughts, also the powershift flywheel slings oil and there should be no pressure build up as you say the vent is fine, maybe some one else has further thoughts

The first guy went thru it at his shop, think he just took it apart and put in new seals, may not have been Case supplied parts, but he is a good Case mechanic. I also think he said he took it to a rebuild shop in Greeley once. Two or three times for him. Had another Case dealer mechanic take it to their shop a couple of times, replaced seals first time and second time I think he said he replaced the bushings. I asked him if the seals could be put in backward, don't remember what he said. I would think he would know what kind of seals it took, unless he just took it to the rebuild shop in Greeley too. It just doesn't seem possible that the flywheel could sling enough oil to make it go thru the seals and fill the starter housing. Thanks.

Had that trouble on the son's 1070. Had to replace the boot on the solenoid. The shaft seal was good but the boot was leaking. Tried about three times before the got the right one ordered.

Sure those starters occasionally leak but in all reality it is sort of a uncommon problem. I doubt that the seal is at fault. After that many attemps I'm sure someone would have gotten it installed correctly. I have installed dozens of drives in the Delco's, and never replaced the seal without a problem. Your starter is a Delco right? I never had a Japan one apart. My guess is some place there a plug missing or a leaking bolt thread or even casting flaw, its just really, really hard to believe that many seals would leak. Thats my 2 cents worth, Rod.

I have been following this thread, and like the rest puzzled. Hard knowing what someone in the past has done, but I am wondering if the armeture shaft is slightly sprung and wiping out the starter seal. I don't ever recall any starter issues on any 90 series tractors we sold.

I had a cont'l with the same disease , electric
shop did it 3 times for a friend, last time they
sent a seal , seal holder, and gasket with it ,
and said you do it. The screw holes that hold
the plate tight on the gasket were bad , put
longer screws in with new gasket, plate ,and seal
and the leak went away.
