You can put 18.4's on there but they will stand taller being as the sidewalls will be pulled in at the bead. 18.4 tires are designed for a 16" rim.

They will only look like they stand taller. If they actually stood taller, then it would suggest that the rubber in the tread area was actually stretching and if that were the case, they would grow regardless of the rim size. Growth of the diameter is an illusion.

Johnpop I suggest you double check that with a a tape measure. I've been selling and installing tires half my life.............

Hi there, I saw your recent post on LA tires and rims. I have two decent tires on my 1949 Case La model tractor that I will be taking off in the future, they are 14-30 on the 14" original rims. I will be installing a pair of mounted 18.4-30 Armstrong tires mounted on 16" rims from a Case 500 diesel tractor that I had. I will sell you the La. tires if you have an interest. thanks, Harold

1031D, logically (just trying to imagine the physics) won't that also make the tires have a "rounder" tread surface? Hence the diametrical (OD) increase to make the tractor stand a little taller. If you put a piece of paper on the table and with one hand on each side push the edges of the paper toward center the center of the paper rises up off the table. Same principle here right, or amd I thinking about this wrong?

Also, you will probably know, are the 18.4 tires what they put on the rice models? I remember it had (to a little kid) very big tires.

Jim

The short answer is that they will work just fine on those rims. I have a friend who has an old Huber with 16.9-30"s on 10" factory rims. I wouldn"t recommend that. Don

Jim, The paper example, was exactly what I was going to post, but I decided to keep my post short and sweet. LOL. I guess we're on the same brain wave today, HeHe.

Jim, that's about right! Closer the beads are more curve to the tread, that's why pullers go wider than design for a flatter footprint. I have 15.5-38's on my 400 diesel and they are fine, sidewalls are flat. My LA has factory 18.4-30's but the build card is missing so if it's a rice tractor is unknown.

Thanks for all your comments, they were helpful. I've seen several LA tractors in Alberta and Montana with 18.4 tires. So its not because they are rice models but for more traction on the prairies. That's my opinion anyway.

Hi there again, My tires are mounted on the original 1949 Case La rims, they both have good tread left on them. Do you need the rims as well or just the tires? The two tires and rims, ready to mount on your La are $700.00. I live in Walnutport, Pa. Depending where you live, I travel to my Son's place in Manchester, Mich. and could deliver them on my next trip there. I also will be going the eastern Tenn. come spring. Where do you live? Let me know what you are thinking. Thanks, Harold

Ed, a friend of mine up there told me the former Case dealer at Killam (Lindseths) have a good selection of used tires and rims for Case tractors. You might give them a call.
