Hello, my dad just bought a 1945 LA propane at a sale today, sorry I don"t have pics yet. We were wondering if the propane is factory or if added later, the tank sits long ways instead of cross ways, and the hood is a little rough around the tank. The serial is 4917346LA, our collection is all massey harris , so I have to get up to speed on JI Case.
thanks

(quoted from post at 17:07:02 02/22/13) That would be an addon; propane equipment came out in 1948 or 1949.
Thanks for the reply, my next question would be was the propane conversion a Case/ dealer add-on, or just a homemade farmer thing.
Thanks.

Case offered a kit to retrofit tractors with LP that included everything you needed, along with a new head, if you wanted the same HP as with gas. Kits were also offered by aftermarket companies. It sounds like the one you are looking at is aftermarket. Don

I put my 48 LA on propane in 1957 an bought the kit. I posted this before but here it is. I bought the kit which had, new head, tank, reg, carb, I also put in new Sleeves and pistons. Painted it all for $404.00.. The 48 LA had more power than the ones through 47. and when I went LP it uped my power and did not use more fuel per hr. than on gas. I pulled a 15ft oneway the first time over and a 15 an 12 ft togather the second time over. and than two 12ft. rod weeders. or a 16ft JDCC Cuilt. with 16 ft of rod behind.
