2290 PTO issues

The pto shaft in my 2290 only fits in properly when
the 1000 rpm end is being used. When you want to the
use 540 end, the 1000 end doesn't go in far enough
to put the snap ring in. It seems as if it is
hitting some sort of spring, because it pushes back
at you. Any ideas? Thanks. Rob

I have a CaseIH 5140, and I assume it is simaler, You have to push in and hold against the spring, then slip the spring clip into place. Nothing to it if you have THREE hands. Because I do not, I put a piece of board again the PTO shaft end,one end of th board on the draw bar, the other end agin my chest, and push. This leaves both my hands free to fiddle with that darn spring clip. Bruce

When yoy push against the spring, you may also have to turn the shaft a bit to get the gears to mesh. You are actually sliding a collar that engages another gear. Push it in so that you can engage the snapring.

yes that is normal the spring you feel is shifting it from 1000 rpm to 540, I just have the snapring ready with one hand use the other to push in and turn a bit if needed do not use a hammer or force it in

99.9 percent of the time it is this simple, but twice now I have had something get on the back side and prevent me from getting the ring in it lacks the width of the ring but you cannot beg it to go, the first time it was a shattered piece of the shift pin,as mentioned earlier is the result of a hammer.

WOW. That is weird (to me) that only on the one end, do you have to push and turn. Yes, it is quite easy if you have three hands. THANK YOU to all.

Sometimes have to use a long pry bar and pry the shaft in with one hand and put the ring in with the other. Turning the shaft might help to.
