I just bought a Wooden Beam CASE walking plow. It still has some of the original paint on the beam. The original wrench & the original stencil is still visable. Sorry no pics as I am still trying to figure that out. But my question is about what time era would this have been made. Does anyone have any brochures or paper work that would date this plow. Thanks Gerald

The wheel that goes on the front is called a gauge wheel and it's not usually needed if the plow if set right. It's sort of a "just in case" that would just skim over the ground and come into play if you hit a soft spot. Yours look like a 8 or maybe 10" plow. It may even be a one horse plow, rare now but not uncommon in the day. The lack of a coulter or any sign of a missing one makes me think it's a garden plow. IIRC they were made up till about WW2.

Outstanding example! You might contact Farmer Browns Plow Shop and see if he has any specific literature on that plow. Wooden beams were available form various companies into the 50's.

Gerald, it's a hard cover book. FULL STEAM AHEAD is the title. They're around. It's almost like a bible for us.

I take it you bought the one that was just on eBay. I never didn't investigate it to see if it came from the plow works or the threshing machine company. Either way that is a very nice piece. I would suggest looking in full steam ahead as they have a lot of early stuff in there.

Hello gmcool
I note with interest yourquery about the book "Full Steam Ahead" written by two people - David.Erb & Eldon.Brumbaugh who was a Head design engineer for Case Co. An EXCELLENT book with 341 pages, hard cover, size 11" x 9", heaps of factory photo's etc etc, and covers the Company and it's machines from 1842 - 1955. The authurs had acces to all company archives for this publication. A MUST FOR ALL "CASE" FANS, there is also volume 2 covering from 1956 to 1994, same size with 208 pages by Tom Stonehouse and Eldon Brumbaugh.
I hope that this helps - GO GET IT !!!

Point me in the right direction for Full Steam Ahead. I have heard of it but that is all I know about it. Is it a book, web site, or talk board? & Yes it was the one on Ebay. Now I need to drive & get it. Gerald

Thanks for the reply. The lay is a lot differant on the one I bought. It is a 12" lay & the lay is shorter or not a long or swept back if that makes sense. I woke up thinking about this plow this morning & I'm going to look in my C. H. Wendel book to see what I can find. I'm not bragging but this plow is museum quality. I will send pics some time. the one I posted is a "breaking" plow style, a regular bottom will be as you describe made to roll over virgin soil, does your beam look like this one at all?

Yes the beam looks like the one pictured but it doesn't have the wheel under it. I think the little wheel is so it doesn't gouge in to deep but I'm not 100% sure. I also have a steel beam CASE walking plow & it does have the little wheel under it. I would like to scour my steel beam up but I need to learn a lot more about hooking it up correctly before I attempt it. I'm told if they are hooked up correcly they don't have a lot of draft. But with half a dozen holes to choose from I don't know which one to use so I have a little learning to do before I drop it in the dirt. Gerald
