Case Hytran or JD Hygard

I'm thinking about converting my Case's to JD Hygard. I know of one poster here that has already done so. Hygard is $2.00/gal cheaper and I have no doubts in regard to it's quality as it specs. the same as Hytran. We always ran universal in the Olivers and this way I could use one oil in everything, furthermore I am getting tired of getting hosed by the friggin Italians.

There is a new formulation of Hytran Ultra coming out. It will be announced in February.

Hytran and Hygard are similar...yet different. Hytran has the capability to absorb and hold water, Hygard does not.

With the issues that water creates in equipement,(old or new) why would anyone want to use Hygard???

Why not take it a step further and find a reputable oil supplier and get a hyd/tran fluid labeled/spec'd to meet them all, and use it in everything?

Doug,
This is OT to your post, but did you notice that you and I are guest posters now? Doesent make much diff., but I thought it was odd. I brought it to Chris's att. last night, but no reply yet.

Hey Doug!! I thought we was pal's? "Friggin Italian" sounds like a blanket term. I'm a Red Blooded American, but proud of my Italian heritage. Say it ain't so!!

Hey neighbor. This is O/T too. I saw your repsonse on the Fiat dozer. Is there anything you haven't done/run? You must never sleep.
I'm fortunate in that I don't like to make a mess of my dozer, and don't have to. It didn't take long to pay for itself. It is impossible to get anyone to do small jobs around the farm.

LOL ,John ,, Hope my Sara dont see that post ..i suppose using hi / tran in a 4020 deere is legal ,,i like bob bancrft idea of gettingg a oil that meets and or exceeds all requirements.. just figured out this winter that the 930 BEAST has a lot of 90 weight in the tranny .gonna change that out and put in hy gard ..

Around here the farm stores carry a "Midstates Reccomends for CASEIH" oil. I think Citgo makes it. It looks like Hytran, smells like Hytran and lasts like Hytran! I seem to get 2 years out of it before it starts getting funky.

Jim: In all gear tranny's such as the 930, I actually add about 1Qt 85W140 to 3Qt's of the thin stuff. Been doing it for years. In the very cold, the hyd's will be slow.

To be honst with you I have never registered, despite a few restrictions I have never seen the reason to do so.

John, I'll have to try that, noticed the 1030 trans gets hot with summer baling and plowing.

I know hytran has some water carrying ability, can't believe hygard wouldn't,water is the one thing that will cause the glue used to bond pto, brake and power shift disks to fail, Dad always used Universal which was basically JD 303 in his 970 and never had a problem in 20 years, neighbors have always used Cenex quicklift in theirs and have never had a problem

The oil company I work for carry 2 kinds of hygard type oil. One is Conoco powertran and the other is Sinclair universal tractor fluid. Can beat JD price by an easy $100 or more in 55 gal drums or by $2 to $3 a gal in 5 gal. Have guys that run one or the other and have no problems. Dont know if this is an option, but might be worth checking into if you have supplier in area for one or the other. Scott

Doug aren't you in MN? I have bulk oil from Case through MN AG Group. They travel all over MN and WI. Last time it was just under $12 a gallon for Hy-tran,15-40 and pre mixed coolant. Free delivery, and when you are on the bulk oil program you get 20% off filters year round. The set up has easily paid for itself, and no more 55 gal. drums. You buy the totes, if you only need one, get one. I'm sure hy-gard is good oil but sure seems thin compared to hy-tran.

Will they sell bulk oil to anyone? Do you have to buy so much? I seem to go through 50-60 gallons of hydraulic oil a year and between 30-50 gallons of engine oil.

1031D, It's not a club anyone can buy oil. No minimum. I think they will also fill your barrels if you bring them to Plainview. Call Plainview, ask for Doug (the oil king) in parts. 1-800-247-4924

WHAT??? Hyguard is 20 wt. and Hytran is 10 wt. That is the reason I switched 15 years ago. Haying in the summer heat the Hytran would get so hot and thin that it was causing problems. Hyguard runs much cooler. I have never broadcast my switch because I figured you guys would give me crap. From the experience I have had it is time to tell you all what you are missing out on. I am never going back! And yes it holds water just as good as Hytran. DK

Hygard justs seems thin. Poured some last week, runs like water compared to hytran, Cenex quik lift seems thin too. I just haven't seen any problems with hytran. To each their own I guess.

OK John we are still pals then!:) Our exchange brought me a smile on a dreary winter day! Don't take any of it personally. It seems all that fiat has done is raise prices and lowered parts availability.

It's something to look into. I just called a jd and Case dealer the other day to price bulk oil in my drum, Hygard $11.49, Hytran $13.35, Napa $10.49, Growmark $9.49

yeah! so slow in the cold weather they dont work../ only the monster beast 8foot blade can be coaxed into lifting after a while , if the temp is below freezing,,., no 3 pt or other remote action ,,.,. but ,that ol worn out 930 starts good with manifold heater ..

Guess I will have to stick up for hytran. More so on the IH side. I'm not sure what Case called for prior to buy out IH. I have trying Conaco oil and found no good results from it other than foaming.I have my own stories on such good results. My last is changing oil in my Farmall 400 when I had about a gallon of milky in the drain pan and one I had some new hytran run into the same pan. After just a few minutes I noticed the little spot of hytran getting bigger. I could see the hytran bubbling and expanding. By the time I got the transmission filled it looked like it had new oil in the drain pan.

Have other proven facts about hydraulic pump problems that were cured by using hytran in the IH tractors. Never had the complaint of over heating transmissions. Have been around IH a lot longer than I have older Case tractors. Have not heard of any problems using JD hygard in other makes. As a JD guy once said "If it's good enough to use in a Deere then it's good enough for any machine.

Another thing to remember is hytran does not foam. Lot of cheaper oils will foam , this causes the over heating

You say you add a little 80-90 to gear trans. Well My gear-chain drive sixspeed 1966 CK 930 has 90 wt hypoid. I bought the tractor with 2000 hrs on it and changed to 90wt at 2800 hr. I run it 6000hrs without changing it. I changed it last year and the old 0il looked great yeat. Had no filings or sludge in it. My question is. Why did they go to tch in the first place. I believe it was about the 65-66 moded they did that.

When people are looking at cheaper oils of any kind, they are concerned about price. THAT is why they are looking at cheaper oils.

What really needs to be looked at is to find BETTER oils. BETTER oils are not always the cheapest to buy.

I'll gladly pay a few $$ more for a BETTER oil than the hundreds or thousands $$$$ more it will cost me on new clutches, bearings or transmission components wrecked by using cheaper oils.
