Since I was putting new shoes on the 4490 I and it seems I couldn't get those bolts on the back of the U joint loose, now I have the planetary off. It is kinda seepy so I thought since I have the seal already I would fix it. I would appreciate any words of wisdom you might have. Thanks Tom

I appreciate your confidence, but it's been a while since i worked on one. An alignment tool & shims are involved. Hopefully someone smarter than me will chime in here.

I think Tom Stanley recently did 1 of these maybe he will see this post and chime in........

Tom I have done them a number of them on 2670's which are built the same as the 4490, I will get out my SM and see what I can do planetary seal replacement isn't all that bad but it will help you if I can scan or photo the steps for you makes it goo better, as to special tools I made due with out any and have had 100% success rate so far it may be later before I can help

Tom,do you think he should check the sun gears at this time, and possibly rotate them?

Dan, they are worth looking at for sure depending on the hrs so far both of the 2670's I had have been fine, the ring gear and pinions are what took the wear on them my guess as to why was improper weighting but yes they will be out so its a great time to do a inspection of all planetairy parts for sure always some thing I got in the habit of doing,,,thanks for bringing it up cnt

Just no practical knowledge on doing them. If I can get it cribbed to my satisfaction I thought I would swap the front planets. and maybe drop the differential out for inspection. I have no special tools other than a couple sets of calipers to check the shim pack. Tom

Tom, I can help you if you have questions about some thing the SM may not explain, glad you have one as they are very helpful, big thing on them is to get the trunions shimmed right and that will keep the axle from wearing the bushings and seals let me know if you have questions I will do my best to help. e-mail [email protected]
