411B-turn key to start and not even a click

A fresh dumping of snow had me ready to get the "58 411B out again. Was sluggish trying to get it started even in heated shop and finally I could hear the "clickclickclick" of solenoid (?) and then nothing when I turned key to "start". Then I noticed negative battery cable was a bit loose. However, tightening it down and even trying to jump start - it doesn"t even click when I turn key to start. No lights, no nothing. Coil, distributor, points all were changed out less then a year ago, and it ran fine two weeks ago.

sounds like a bad connection clean/check all battery connections at batt and where they hook to solinoid and ground

Dead battery or bad cable connections some place or maybe even a bendex locked up in the ring gear due to a weak battery. I would check the battery and connections and loosen the starter bolts and wiggle it some to make sure the starter is not locked up on the flywheels which is a common problem with many tractors. Or the solenoid has gone bad and you can test that by jumping across the battery cable.start side of the solenoid

I am having a similar problem, I have decided it is probably the ignition switch. Let you know how that turns out.

Tightening a loose cable on a layer of corrosion won't get you anywhere. Take both cables loose/off, clean the posts and tcable ends with baking soda and water mix to neutralize the acid build up if any then sand paper or brush inside the cable terminals and post ODs.

I cleaned off battery posts, solenoid posts, start post. Battery sitting at 12.8V. Loosened up starter to make sure it wasn"t locked up on flywheel, and also ran wire direct from battery to starter. Would get a little spark from battery to solenoid or from battery to starter. Could hear solenoid click a couple times when turning the key, but then try it again and nothing. Like it"s grounding out. Thinking bad solenoid and/or bad starter. Unless I"m missing something else?

Look for hard black corrosion on the battery posts. It has to be scraped off or sanded off. The handy round wire brush thing won' t get through it.

All posts/clamps cleaned with baking soda and emery cloth. All is bright and shiny.

Barry, I agree on the scraping, that ole pocket knife tool is hard to beat for jobs like this (posts and inside cable ends), but some folks don't carry them.

Takes a little work but did you pull the starter and do a bench test to see if it turns under no load and the Bendix works? That could help narrow it down.

I did pull the starter and applied power to it - it's spinning.....also double-checked voltage readings at battery posts - 12.48, then put battery clamps back on and checked voltage at coil and starter ground - 12.45.
