I just bought a 400 and want to restore it for 4h . If any one has really cool stories of them. It would be cool to learn.

don't have any cool stories but I can barely remember riding with Dad on his and the day it left and the 830 showed up, I bought one in the mid 90's and resleaved it. We had sold the 830 nearly 10 years before but I caught myself pushing my foot down for the foot throttle that the 400 did not have the first time I got it running and backed it out of the shed, old habit I guess! I used it for haying, spraying, drying corn ect. then sold it as I fiigured I had too many tractors to keep up.

For some reason Dad had a couple DC's and a 70 JD diesel. Iwas about a sophmore in high school and would plow till about 8 and then go home to do homework. Dad and brothers milked and did chores. Up at 4 am brush the frost off the seat on the 70 and fire the pony and plow till 7:15 then get ready for school. Several times a mechanic would come and try everything to keep the flywheel tight on the 70. Dad traded for a CASE diesel 400. Came home from school and got a quick lesson on shifting the newly painted 400 with comfort cover on. Man did I love that tractor! Didn't need to wear Dad's Air Force parka anymore and my ears didn't ring when I went to sleep! Sealed my love for CASE tractors with that 400 Diesel.

We purchased our 1st 400 diesel in 1956 with a 420 picker. That was the start of exclusively case tractors. Traded a Super MD Farmall for a 800 diesel in early 60's. In 63 we hooked the 400 and 800 in tamden pulling 2 4x16 plows with them. The outfit was 52 feet long but was easy to operate. I was a sophmore in high school when we built the tamden. Purchased another 400 the next year to pull the planter. I spent many hours on 400's and the 800. Have since had 2 930's, 1030, 2 970's, 1070, 1175, 530, 480, 2470, and currently have vac, sc, dc, 800 gas, 930, 1030, 1370, 2290, 580, and 9130. Maybe an little longer than planned but true case love came from the 400. My Grandpa had an VAC then a SC which I spent a lot of time on before the 400.

yes the roar of 4 is easier on the ears than the pow-pow of 2..Btw ,, That 70 diesel Deer had a similar problem a Pretty 730 deer had in the neighborhhod ,,and the starter was poor, one day the fella was trying to beata rain and finish planting , and sure enuf that dam nut was backing off again,, HE DId the UNTHINKABLE,, Idled that deer way back , And took his wrench and TRIED TO CATCH THE NUT,,well thwe wrench caught alright,, and threw it rite into a new 38 tire , He later Sheepishly admitted to me ,it could easily had run the wrench thru him and hung him on the tire .. the fella is nearly 80 now ..

Scott,
I have the service Manual available for free download on my website in the discussion area under the manual section under case tractors.

I know what you mean about missing the foot throttle. it must have had it at one time since the pedal is there? I keep thinking I should get it set up although it looks like a fellow would have to fabricate a part or two. I also have a ps unit to install, hopefully this winter.
