VAC-14 shift lever rubber boot

I need to replace the rubber boot on my shift lever of my VAC-14. The original shift knob is still in very nice condition so I don't want to damage it when replacing the boot. Now, i've seen in the salvage yards, VAC's shift levers with either screw on or pressed on shift knobs (knobs missing on the shafts). Also the pressed on shafts seem to have a knurled mounting area that wouldn't allow the knob to simply twist off.
From what I can see, the shaft on my VAC-14 doesn't look threaded.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The shift lever is threaded. Take a channel lock pliers and wrap a rag around the pristine knob, grab it with the pliers and remove. Although not original, you can get a boot from Tractor Supply or similiar store to replace boot or knob should it break. The knurled piece you see is what the knob material is attached to.

I use a wooden clamp sometimes called a hand screw to unscrew stubborn bakelot knobs off.

When you get the knob off according to procedures below (I think they all screw off and are not pressed on) John Saeli has the proper boots for most JI Case tractors up thru 30 series and maybe newer. John is one of the best sources I know of for on line Case part orders.

Then as I understand this, the knob has a threaded insert set inside the bakelite that is threaded to the shaft. Would explain why I've seen shift levers in bone yards -both ways.
