my neighbor up the road is in need of a Connecting Rod for his 870 diesel. The crank went out and he has located one beeing shipped as we speak but hasn't been able to put his hands on a rod as of yet. I would appreciate it (and so would he) if there is any of you informeed Case buffs out there that can help him out. Please email me asap and perhaps we both can make it happen for him??? Thanks for now ____ Jim

Jim,
There are two distinctly diff, cranks for 336 engines. Hope your buddy has the wright one comming. More info needed.(to my knowledge 870s had the large journal cranks), BUT!!!!!

I think all 870's had the large, but after all these years you never know what one might find. I did not know they made a small journal 336 until I overhauled a W14 payloader. Rod.

Rod,
I bought and installed several 336T industrial units in 7 and 870 tractors. Case Co.people linked me up with Sandhill Equip. in Bassett NE and I was able to get skid units less sheet metal, drive systems and acessories. All small journal turboed 336s. Bolted them into 7/870 gas chasis and had 100 plus PTO hp tractor.
We also ordered in all the top end parts off these engines and woke up a lot of older 7 and 870s

He needs to try and get one very near on weight to his. There is a couple diffrent rods styles that could be in it. Some have a larger weight on the bottom cap
and some have a taller one at the top by the pin. I know there is a diff in the total weight on these. That being said i more than likely would have one either way. Thad

Loren, does'nt it seem odd that CASE chose the small journal 336 to turbo? The other thing that really confuses me why put 2 different cranks in a 336 anyway. One would think there would be dollars to be saved in tooling and inventory by making 1 size. That decision of theirs never made any sense to this ole farm boy. Rod.

Can or has anyone converted an 870 gas to a diesel? I am thinking of trying it. I know the top end and cam changes but do the 870 gasers have a balanced oil pump? Just an idea now but might try it.
Also I have an extra set of 870 gas rods but they have a smaller wrist pin than my 970 diesel so i would guess they would not work on an 870 diesel.

Some of the very early diesels used the small wrist pins. I sold a set I had from an 870 gas to a guy who needed them for a early 970 diesel.

870 gas uses a balancer oil pump just like the 267 and 336

Aren't the cams the same? What are you planning on using for heads?

I plan on using 970 heads. My VERY early 970 sn number 8650012 had larger wrist pins. I pulled the original rod bearings out dated OCT 69. Just need to find an intake for the 870 diesel. gas cams have a shorter duration from what I have read. Intake is open longer on diesels to max out air into combustion chamber.

0012, That is very early... The 870 gas I knocked in the head for parts was in the 100's and I thought it was early.

Count your head bolts. It sticks in my head that the gas had one less bolt.
