Ive been scrubbing ,cleaning and greasing zerk fittings as per operating manuals instructions. When she idles in neutral I notice that a mild knocking, clatter /rumble just rear of the belt pully cover about 8-10 inches back. The pto is engaged and the transmission is in neutral .The noise is most prevalant on the right side of the transmission.I will follow up with more specifics as i go. Have any of you fellows that have been in to your Big 400's heard similar noises or have a remedy?

Chuck: My dad"s 400 had some bearings in the transmission fail, we had to split the tractor and build up a couple of shafts along with the bearings. That was 30 years ago, and I still use the tractor. I can"t remember what the symptoms were. You know what we are going to tell you don"t you. See if there is any metal in the oil when you drain it. Then take the covers off the trans and rear end and look for excessive play. What weight oil does the trans/rear end have in it? If it has 90 weight, 140 might help. Did you grease the throwout bearing? It usually gets missed.

take off the cover and see what the throw out brg looks like, some of them had a grease zerk if it does try that and see if it changes the sound, just my thoughts but the hyd drive shaft really shouldn't change sound when you step on the clutch as it turns all the time the engine is running and the flywheel carries that end of the shaft,, just an idea maybe wrong cnt

Napa 90WT MINERAL FOR THE TRANS DONE EARIER THIS SUMMER, NO METAL OR MOISTURE! I WILL SHOOT A COUPLE OF SHOTS TO THE THROWOUT BEARING TOMMOROW.THE NOISE WAS REAR OF THE BELT PULLY COVER AND ABOUT HALFWAY UP YHE TRANS HOUSING.

I have no remedy, but have noticed on my 400, old 730 and my 830's that when the trans is in high the noise is the loudest, when you shift to low, it gets pretty quiet, the 400 being the worst, I have been putting off pulling the 400 apart because I have a parts 830 with a good trans.

SOOO ,IF I PUT THE SHIFTER IN NEUTRAL PULL THE TRANS.COVER AND KEEP MY HAND OUT OF THE TRANS.AND FIRE HER UP I SHOULD BE ABLE TO SEE INPUT SHAFT .A STETHASCOPE SHOULD HELP ME ALONG!

Chuck, I have seen the nylon oil slinger under the two speed shaft get a piece of metal imbedded in it and really make noise. It is a rather fast rattle. The later tractors such as the 30 series all had aluminum gears which were not as susceptible to noise as they allowed chips to imbed and not push back out like the more flexible nylon style, just another thing to look for, all the guys have valid suggestions.

Chuck,
You might just be listening tooo close. All 4cyl motors have an inbalance in them or(pulse) especially at low RPM. That is why later Case engines in that size range had balancers installed. You may just be hearing this (pulse) being transfered into the drive line. If you want to hear this exemplified, just listen to a small frame 430-630 tripple range at an idle. Early JD 4cyls had the same problem.

Interesting! I will modify my stethoscope so that i can sit in the seat, and see if it amplifies or decreases when i put her in gear..ALL MANY THANKS FROM THE CASE FAMILY>I WILL KEEP YOU APPRISED AS I MOVE FOWARD ON THIS! CHUCK

Chuck,
Take off the white shop apron, toss the ear peice, turn up the radido,HeHe, or better yet, hook the old girl on something and see what it sounds like under load, in all gears, at low RPM.If you still hear the same unusual sound, refer to previous posts.

Does it still make the noise when the shifter is in the neutral position between high and low range?
