This is a picture of a diesel power unit that belongs to my cousin. It obviously has 400 sheet metal, but the serial tag reads model 301. The engine tag on top of the injector pump gear drive is labeled as a 301. The engine also has the horizontal oil filter. Is this just a 30 series power unit with some leftover 400 sheet metal or what?

you are right in the left over sheet metal, they were just using up NOS parts on the power units, some where I have a spec sheet showing the 301 (830 dsl) engine with the "400" sheet metal like in your pic cnt
Case made several power units that were used instead of a full cost tractor. I was fortunate to buy a 609 power unit. it is the power plant of the 600 tractor. Went into a water pumping station building brand new and never seen day light. It had a 1200 gallon a minute water pump behind it for city back up drinking water. It had less than 200 hrs and was in mint condition.

WOW what a great find for sure!!! how about considering a story for one of the magazines on the lift of the power unit? thanks for sharing,, just a guess but I am betting there is not another any where with those low hours and even in that condition cnt
