Tom,and I were talking today about "ED" drills, and the discussion went too production, pretenneco buyout, factory? First, what was the production of the drills, has anyone seen a pre69 old logo "ED"? Any pics? What factory were they built at?
Was the "ED" all Case built? Tom and I thought it was?
My Dad was a diehard Case man,but never ordered a Case drill in,never.
Will enjoy any discussion
Maybe Tom will post his "ED"s so we get a idea,as we both only seen them with the tire track Case logo

Have you been to the archives at the top of this page? right click on KEYWORD SEARCH and type ed drills. There is a little information you can enjoy in the interim. chuck

I bought a ED drill new. Still have it. The seed metering drive gears all have the Case parts numbers,Txxxxx etc. They are the same as earlier Case drills. The bearing holders for the axle shafts have a Txxx number also. When I first got it I had a lot of trouble breaking the casting that holds the down pressure spring and disc opener. Tried to get them under warranty, but Case wouldn't honor the warranty as they were done building them. They had an upgrade of that casting and never broke any of the heavier ones. Seems I was told Case took some off the shelf parts and worked with another company to build the drill, possibly Great plains??

the set I have I am second owner on, I agree on all the Case casting, seed boxes/feed ect, my thoughts on them are this, Case had several things they were proud of at the "70" series Intro that I remember very well, this series drills and the double windrow header(shiftable draper) they had then on a model 856 windrower, it was on a Killberry power unit instead of Hesston made for grain applictions first then they told us it would be "beefed" for hay cutting the next year which never came as they dropped them with all harvesting equipment in 1970, we were told by our block man the hdr was in house built, I am sure it was sold to Killberry as they have a new version of it today, the "ED" drills I think were the same way as they were the only Case drills to have the cast aluminum feed cups instead of the cast units all previus Case drills had, if you look at a Kirshmen/Melroe/Lilliston drill they have many similar designs as the "ED" units and I always wondered if Case did not sell off the design to them I have no proof of this just a gut feeling, also our dealership never sold a Case drill but we did sell Kirshmen hoe drills not sur why I chose to type all this just felt the need I guess,,, by the way does any one have a ops manual for them they would sell??? cnt

I have an old Case drill that I have been thinking of restoring. I don't know what model it is. It is painted green. Boxes are in good shape, problem is all the discs are rusted away to nothing and it's going to be costly to buy new discs. I will post a photo of it when I get a chance.

Here's my end wheel drill Ande. Not a press drill like Nutty's but I'm sure its the same box. Sorry for poor photo. My internet is down so had to take a picture of my computer screen with my phone and send it that way.

Here's my hoe drill a bit older and obviously Case built.
What's interesting is the galvanized box was painted over and decaled from the factory. The wheels and decals are sand colored. Maybe one of the last Case built ????

Where did you find the end wheel drill? I bought my press drill in Plankinton SD. The neighbors bought 2 7' drills there also. The only other ones I knew of at the time had been sold at Huron Case Power and Equipment. They were sold out but I bought the walkway kit from them.

Mine came out of Canada. Gramps and Dad had Oliver JD and IH drills. Neighbors had IH JD or Melroe. Always wondered why Case didn't fare better with their drills. They seemed to do fine with tillage and hay equipment in the area but the planting equipment just didn't have a following.

some where I have the wholesale order sheet for them and they were available in 7' and 8' sizes with up to a three unit hitch, I also have a parts book for them, mine are 8' units cnt

Brad I am glad I found out you were bidding on the press drill on the trailer as I was going to bid also, glad you got it John saved me and or you some money as I was going to go much higher than what you got it for but I was just wanting to make sure it was preserved,,, again so glad you got it sure would like to see it in the field though cnt

by the way I have two more 8' footers to get home they have the open rubber wrapped press wheels instead of the solid ones, I also know of one other 7' unit cnt

Without advertising what I paid I'll just say somebody else wanted it as I paid twice what I thought it would have brought.
But hey, thats what makes an auction! The owner fessed up to bending the hitch into a pretzel when he got too rough with it moving it for the sale. What he didn't own up to was the bent frame that "mustve been that way" even though the paint had fresh stress cracks in it and both transmissions had two gears each with half the teeth freshly busted off. Grrr. So unless I find a donor drill with the same gear ratios, I don't think it will be planting any time soon.

I can't tell you how many times good old machinery I wanted turned into scrap two days before the sale. Usually from being liberated from the sod or trees in a not so gentle way.

do the end wheel units use the same gearing? I knew where one partial press drill was but not sure if it's still there, I had spoken for it and will check to see if its there and has the parts you need,, man that sucks they tore it up, really ticks me off!! cnt

you add 6" of furrow spacing to each side and they plant 8' so yes they measure 7' wide a 7' planting drill is only 6' wide, my drills plant a 16' wide strip, cnt

Finally found all the lit. for the ED drills. The drive mech. on the fertilizer units are the same as my Melroe drills but the fert. box itself is made out of aluminum. So Case must have bought fert. units from Melroe. Tom, if you do have 8' units they must be special as all this lit. lists only 7' press and 12' endwheel.

I have the fertilizer attachments for mine, have to post a pic, and yes I agree same gear cluster as my Kirshman and Melroe drills, cnt

Brad, I'm not sure how I missed this post, but that's a very neat drill. I know how mad I would be if that happened to something I wanted! The guy that had my ED was supposed to keep it inside up in Canada, instead it was put out after about a month. So it spent nearly six months out in the Ontario acid rain. The paint was much brighter in the original pictures of it. Nothing I could do about him lying either.
