I have paroozed the Archives for the most acurate color for painting rims for the 400 series tractors. Some are of the opinion that silver [Part #?]is used during that period and aluminum{Part#? was later used on the IH tractors.Perhaps I may get some clarification on this? Pastor John gets the chills every time he sees my rims that were painted over in flmb. red. Thanks always in advance CHUCK

Yep, flambeau rims would give me the chills too! Everybody has a different thought on the subject but I have had good results priming the rims and painting them aluminum color. I've got pictures of Dad's new 970 and 1070 and they were bright aluminum. Look in the old colored lit. and they appear to be aluminum also, bright and shiny. Priming before painting gives a deeper color.

Hate to be stupid here, but I am getting ready to paint my 630 rims. To me Aluminum is silver in color. What is the difference between silver and aluminum? Is aluminum now what the Detroit folks call Argent, like they paint auto and pick-up aluminum rims with?

Jim

I really thing the originals were galvanized, but I am not for sure.

You can paint silver with aluminum paint and it would look ok. The other option, which looks nice but not as shiny as aluminum paint is to paint them with wheel silver. Chevy rally rim silver is one color option.

Well on a certain M5-Diesel that I have I took the "Power-Adjust" wheels to a local Powder Coating place and had them coated silver. Then slipped a set of 16.9-38s on them. Looks good to me but it is my tractor anyways. Just need to get all that Prairie Gold done.

Bryce, I thought about doing that on mine, they are power adjust too. How does the powder coat hold up on the rails if you adjust them sitting on the ground and using the engine to adjust them as per Case owner's manual instructions? Guess that jacking them up and doing the adjust by hand would help preserve the coating.

Do they have an easy (inexpensive) way to strip them before coating. Some one had painted mine Flambeau Red over the silver.

Would I be better off having them regalvanized?

Jim

A friend of mine had a place in Milwaukee galvanize the rims on his Farmall M and I think it cost him around $200 for all 4.

1031D, I just may call Houston coating in a few weeks and see what they would price them at.

The price you got sounds pretty good, hope I can do as well.

Jim

Jim, my local powder coater also does sand blasting. IIRC it was about $100 for blasting and $100 for coating (two 15x38 wheels). I have not adjusted them since installing them. I am having some problems with the seal in the lift pump on that old Bosch pump and haven't done much with it.
