Speedy VAI?

I just brought home a VAI. When I went to drive it I noticed it only had 3 speeds but third gear was danged fast, I would think well over 10 mph. If I tried to shift where 4th should be I could almost feel the gear start to engage but wouldn't quite. When I looked close at the shift pattern casting I could see that 4 was ground off very nicely.
Was there a way to lock out 4th gear? With a 4th gear this thing would probably do close to 20mph. Is that right?

Go to 5/11/2011 archive post on VAI and you will find some interesting info on your tractor. It seems some industrials had higher geared transmissions. I would bet your tractor was locked out of 4th at one time because some State or county supervisor thought it was too fast for the employees. Just a guess.

VAI's turn more rpm's than other VA series tractors. I think a VAC turns 1425 and a VAI turns 1800.That makes them run a lot faster.
I used the gps to check my VAI and it will run 18mph in 4th.
You could pull the gearshift cover to see how they modified it.It is possible that they made a spacer on the shifter rail to limit the shifter fork movement. If so it may not take much to get 4th gear going.

It looks as though 4th gear has been removed from the Counter-shaft and replaced with a bushing. Would anyone know what the high speed part number would be for this, have one, or be able to tell me how many teeth should be on the fast fourth counter-shaft gear?

Just in case there is a difference it is an Early 1942 by the serial number.
Thank you!

The hi speed VAI transmissions have a different shift pattern than any other VA. The hi speed trannys have a conventional shift pattern like an old 4 speed car. 1 3 forward and 2 4 rearward. Normal VAC's are 1 2 forward and 3 4 rearward.
