I was checking for bent or twisted rods by putting two rods over the same wrist pin and checking to see if the big ends made contact all the way around. I fliped the top rod over so the caps were opposite one another and observed that the distance between the wrist pin ends were closer together,about 1/8", the other way a little over 1/4". All four rods were the same. I wanted to put the rods in with the caps to the carb side so the strong part of the rod took the power stroke instead of the bolt but it appears that shouldn't be done or the rod will not be centered between the piston wrist pin bosses. I installed them per the manual. I have read here in other posts that they can be turned. I didn't want scored pistons so I stuck with the case manual. Any other views on this? I'm working on two other engines, one for a puller with M&W pistons.

Back in the day, Dad had an SC that he overhauled with bigger sleeves and pistons and a bigger carburetor. He pulled a 3-14 CASE plow with it.

early SC had 3/12 bore late SC's have 3 5/8 with a larger carb.

A late SC will handle a 3 btm plow or almost any implement that a early DC will pull.

Don't misunderstand me please, I really enjoy my SC, It has cleaned snow, bushhoged pasture, run the sickle mower in the hay field, pulled the rake. Its getting tired, actually it was probably tired when I bought it. Before I put new working clothes on her, I need to address these engine issues. gobble

What all did you do to your SC engine? My 52 SC smokes and is lacking in power. I understand they were never a power house and won't be. I've never done a compression test on it. Am wondering what you did and what you used for rings etc. gobble

You can bore out the sleeves of your '52 SC to 3 11/16" and put in button top pistons with a 5617 head in good shape along with the late model carb and you should be good for 37 hp. I have two '54's that have button top pistons with 3 5/8" bore that turn 32hp on the dino at 540pto rpm. The first time I pulled my '44 SC after rebuilding the head it powered out in 4500 class and had motor to spare. It is 3 11/16" bore. It carrys the front wheels. I use Hastings piston rings. I'm working to get 42-45 hp from an SC engine with modified factory parts.

I guess I don't understand why everyone thinks an sc is such a dog, Dad had a farm with lighter ground in the early 60's where he pulled 3-14's with one in 2nd and in the heavier clay loams an sc would pull 2-16's while an M or dc pulled 3-14 or 3-16

you must have got the pit-bull of the sc family. my sc was the small beagle. just followed the dc with it's nose.

I like the sc for light farm and yard work. Just a nice little handy tractor that is much easier to drive and less ackward than a dc. That and the fact that they practially make gasoline.

I have seen SC's at tractor pulls that were very strong older fellow had it stock as he had not worked on it. Others would power out almost to embarras the owner. I have always wonndered if the timming gears were all cut with keyway the same. Should have pulled front cover on mine and tried different teeth.
