The manual that come with 970 calls for hd30w oil
should I use this or do I put the shell rotella t 15w40 that we run in the rest of our deisels trucks and tractors witch are much newer.

here we go again ,its been a while ,, but it will be good to educate ourselves and maybe worry and fret .. lol,..for the record ..i use rotella triple protection 15w40 in everything , including my crown vic and lawn mowers

When the 970 was built, 15W40 oil was either in it's infancy, or wasn't even available. Here is the case for 15W40. Research has found that the majority of engine wear occurs on startup. The 15W40 having the flowability of a 15W gets through the pump & through the engine faster than the heavier SAE 30. When warm, the 15W40 has the lubrication qualitites of a SAE40, exceeding those of the straight SAE30.
My frustration comes when I furnish an engine kit for an SC or DC, & the owner tells me he is going to run Non-Detergent oil in his new engine because that is what the Owner's Manual calls for. Oil technology & protection has come a long ways since then.

I wouldn't use rotella to oil chains in a manure spreader. Many good oils out spec it. You can put whatever you want in your case dsl., mine will continue to get Case No. 1 30w oil as Case still reccomends. They have never endorsed 15-40 for pre CDC engines in a Case or IH tractor.

hi there, j Saelie..tell me if i am doing rite ..,..the DCs gets 40 w ,50w racing oil if its gonna do heavy tillage work in the hot summer ,,.. because i had that drummed in to me as a kid by Dad and all his Uncles to protect the babitted bearings .. the sc gets 30 wt,,the great uncles gave no specific instructions for them .. other than, a vac can do the job of a sc ..

I always run Rotella 15/40 in everything. Never had any problems, but my tractors don't get a lot of hard use. My truck has just under a million miles and 18,000+ hours and doesn't use any more oil than it did new on a 20,000 mile oil change.

I am no oil specialist but think about this ,oil technology has came a tremendously long way since 1970.My opinion is that any quality 15w40 is better that the oil that was available then. My 2 cents.

Guess i'm old fashioned, but have never used anything but straight 30w year round and always will. Have never had a problem.

Ive been runnin 15-40 in all my tractors regardless of color for 30 years, used many drums of Case/IH 15-40 as well as Shell Rotella, Now I use Amsoil 15-40 all year round, never had a problem with any of it and I'm not afraid to pull the throttle to the end and let em buck!!
