Bought a rough looking 1290 I asked about the steering on a couple of weeks ago.Got it running with a little bit of trouble.Smokes like a chimney.Definetely unburned diesel fuel not coolant or oil. What would be the most likely cause of this. Thanks, Bill M.

Compression issue. Most likely a broken piston/rings or 4 from someone using ether on it.

It is possible it just has glazed bores/stuck rings, but that is unlikely at best.
