Here's the deal, I'm overhauling a 1070 that had spun #4 con rod. Guys at the machine shop said the journal is past .030, but that it can be repaired. Well back in the 80's when I started on my own I had 3 cranks with similar problems repaired. All broke in the throw next to the repaired journal in less than 200 hrs. My thoughts were 3 strikes and you out, I will never used a repaired crank again and I have not. I have a used std crank to install in the 1070, I'm just wondering if anyone thinks the damaged shaft is worth saving or if it should join the others on the pile. Rod.

Rod,i'm sure my shop is no differant than anyones we save stuff for later ,i have a 1070 block w/crank that spun bearing, been in the corner for at least 15 years, for the risk, i say heave it.

I've had the same results you have, I'd s***can it. If you try and fix it you'll always wonder everytime that customer calls or pulls in the driveway if it let go

The heat from welding up the journal has to change the molacular structure of the crank. If the tractor is a" keeper" replace the crank! If the tractor, is going to auction, the repair still may not pay off. I believe that in your post, you have already answered your own question.

Replace it,like the other guy said.heat changes metal to much.weather you,re keeping it or taking it to a auction fix the tractor the right way. We have all bought stuff at auctions, wouldn't,t want the next guy to have ea reason to dislike a certain tractor.

Rod, Funny you should post, I pitched a 970 crank yesterday (after walking buy it for 1-1/2 yrs. It measured fine, but had been welded on the #1 rod many years ago. There was a crack from the oil passage outwards. My machine shop tells me welded cranks SHOULD be fine in non turboed engines, I have been to gun shy to try it.

Hi Eric, I thought maybe someone would have had goodluck repairing them, but looks like everyone agrees with what I've been doing, Yep I'm going to pitch the darn thing and not look back. Rod.

Dad had an 870 done back in the 80s, it had spun #1 a couple times. An outfit in Pittsburgh did it that specialized in cranks. She is still running.

I never had much faith in welded crank journals. When I had the crank stroked for my CC puller Jack Golder built up the main journals to standard as well as adding an inch of stroke to the rods. It has ran since 2008 at 12.5:1 compression but thats a big difference from running all day in a dsl. I guess I would grease it up and keep it but would look for a good grindeable used one, be sure to look at the radius area for wear.

Hi Doug, it has always amazed me they can build those cranks up like you mentioned, true they don't have to live very long. I always feel like we're wasting a good part when I throw away a good looking crank with just one bad journal. Rod.

Thats good to know, maybe theres hope yet. It would be painful to disgard a 870 crank, that would be difficult to find I would think. Rod.

Dont know where you are located but if you go to craiglists louisville ky search 504 case complete engine for 1500.00 may be a cheaper way to go. Here is the number if you are interested 270 692 7171.
