Does anyone know how many 970 gas eight speed tractors were made?
We have 970 eight speed gas tractor in good condition, but we are wanting to build a six cylinder gas for pulling.
The question is do we use the gas engine from this tractor for a puller
(in front of a 30 series rear end) and repower this tractor with a 451
turbo or non turbo diesel engine?
The other option is to look for a gas six cylinder to build the puller and leave this one intact as a restored 970 gas. What is the best way to go? Thanks

There were not very many built, I can say that, even though the production numbers have never been printed. I've heard of eight 970 gas tractors, including yours, but then I hunt for this stuff. I only saw one with a cab. Compare that to countless diesels. The 8 speed would make it even less common, because there were less 70 series 8 speeds built in general. You have a tractor that should be restored, no doubt, it's an odd duck. Please post some pictures of it, if you can.

A 970 gas 8 speed seems rare to me to the point that it may be a collectors item some day.

I know you said you wanted a pulling tractor and this is just my humble opinion but I personally would consider keeping the 970 gas and restore it to its glory and finding an old 930 gasser for the pulling tractor.

This is just my opinion.

Please share some pictures of your tractor I would like to see a 970 gas.

I don’t think I have ever seen one

I have a 930 crank that has a offset grind on it that would give you 3/8" stroke for sale. If you are interested post away to get ahold of you and ill get ahold of you. I also have a beefed up pressure plate and clutch for sale if interested.
