As far as correct alignment, I can try to explain how mine is and how it seem to work (or not). "I made an initial attempt which must be wrong because the "lever to anchor bolt" spring at the rear of the linkage would pull the throttle open and not closed. " This is correct. This spring pulls the throttle open when you use the hand throttle (by pushing the lever down (counterclockwise)). When you push the lever counterclockwise it relaxes the "throttle lever tension" spring so the "lever to anchor bolt" spring can now pull the throttle open. "There is a spring that attaches to the "friction plate" arm. Where does the other end attach?" Mine is attached to the pin for the rod that goes forward to the governor as it looks like you do in the picture. When the hand throttle is in it's idle position, this "throttle lever tension" spring has tension on it making it act as the foot throttle return spring. "When the hand throttle lever is pushed forward (clockwise) should that open or close the throttle?" Close, I hope, since that is the only way I can get mine to work. This system seems to rely on those springs counter-acting each other and everything being nice and clean. And, of course, the governor plays into equation too. I can get the foot throttle to work just fine but I can only get the hand throttle to open the throttle 1/3 - 1/2 speed. I've had to adjust the anchor bolt to almost the end of the threads putting as much tension on that spring as it can. Hope this helps. If you have any insight or suggestions. please share them!
