Case 1070, metal in oil pan

Looking for some advice. I bought a Case 1070 this summer with about 8100 hours. When I changed the oil, I found some metal in the bottom of the drain pan. The largest piece was about 1/8"; it looks like bearing metal. I also think there is a slight knock coming from the back of the engine when warm and idling. I don't hear anything unusual under load, but the old girl makes quite a racket anyway, and I don't know what's normal. The tractor didn't come with any maintenance records.

The question is: Do I tear into the engine now, or wait until I have an indication of something really wrong.

If I do dig into the engine, can I get at all the bearings and remove the crankshaft with the engine in the frame?

Thanks,

Mitch

pull the pan off. check the crank to see if it is serviceable. the bearings can be rolled out and in
with roll pins. might need over size bearings.

Drop the oil pan and take a look at the bearings. If you're finding metal you may have a spun bearing. You probably need to pull the engine. Have your local auto machine shop to check the crankshaft to see if it can be ground undersize. That engine may need a complete rebuild with that many hours. Hal

You DO have something terribly wrong!! Take it apart now. Like the others have said, bearings can be "rolled" in with the crank in place. However, if the crank is damaged, the tractor will need to be split to remove the crank for repair. Good luck.

Thanks Gentlemen,

Not what I wanted to hear, but what I expected. Snow is coming soon, and I don't have a shop.

and you are still running it? sounds like the damage is already done, sounds like you spun a rod or main, better figure on pulling the crank and grinding it if it's a spun rod if it's a spun main you have a really big project
