Case 800 case-o-matic

I have a 1958 Case 800 COM. What is the right fluid to fill the transmission? I was thinking hy-tran but keep thinking ring and pinion diffs. in automobiles get gear oil. would there be a problem with filling the trans. with 75w-90? Also, does anyone elses COM grind when shifting into gear? It seems to be better when warmed up. Would DEXRON 3 help this? Reverse seems to not grind at all. And once in say fourth gear you can shift between third and fourth slick as a button. But going back to second an first it wants to grind. When it grinds and slides into gear the tractor kinda jumps forward just a hair but it doesnt try to creep before releasing clutch.

sounds like you have a good handle on proper care of the 800.in my Opinion They are the FINE 1st LADY of CASE for 1958 ..hy /tran is a favorite .I use DEXTRON 3 in the torque converter and 90 weight in the rear trans ,i also added pint Lucas hub seal in the tranny and LUCAS automatic transmission sealer in the torque converter ,the nature of the beast is to grind a few gears ,i occassionally glide the gears while shifting in direct drive perfectly..

With proper oil in the TC and low idle speed, the COM that I had ground so bad on first start that I resorted to putting the tranny in gear before starting the engine. Held the clutch pedal in of course. May have bypassed a safety to do that. The gear grinding was tollerable when up to temperature.
