Would someone be kind enough to tell me at what ser. number the heads changed on a 500? I am looking at a 1954 and would prefer to buy one with the later heads as the earlier gaskets can be found but would like to find one with the more common later design. The ser.# of the 500 is 8040070.

according to the archives the later gasket will work in the earlier engine according to Don and John so maybe it isn't an issue to be concerned about

here are the difference between the two. More on head casting vs serial number.

Doug I looked at my 377 engines and the only ones that had casting numbers on the outside were the propane. So I think the diesel casting number is under the valve cover.
