had fire here today that burned 450 acres on me and my neighbor, I jumped on the 1470 with the offset disec and helped put it out, I was in such a hurry I did not take the camera with me for shots while I was working in it, the flames where as high as the hood on the 1470 most times some times higher, the fire department could not do any thing but watch me as I put up a fire guard and also was throw dirt right in the fire putting it almost out at times she jumped my guard at burned a bit more but we managed to keep it down to 436 acres and only about 35 on me after me and the 1470 had it about 80% contained the one mines blade came through and widened my guard, it was great to see them!! the Sherrif boys are thinking it was a arson set fire as there was three different ones with in a couple miles and no sign of a flat tire or any other obivous ignition point cnt

I had a lightning strike in May on my place with about the same result. It hit in the CRP which was thick and very dry from all the rain last year, and took off before the neighbor and I could get it. The VFD folks got here very fast, as did two neighbors with their discs. Between all that and a county road, it only burned about 100 acres. Fortunately, the wind was blowing away from the house. The power company had to come out and replace a bunch of poles the next day, but that was the only real damage.
That was in May. It is so much drier now after a spring and summer of almost no rain. I'm west of Billings, about as dry down where you are I think.

Why couldn't the fire dept help?
Our Vol dept has a 1 ton pickup and a tanker truck with a nozzle mounted right on the front bumper. Just drive along side a grass fire and direct the nozzle from inside the cab.
I thought everybody had them in your dry grassland country.
Sure glad no Case machinery (or people)were harmed in the making of those pictures.

Brad, yes they have the nozzle that will spray as you drive but this fire was so fast and hot it would not have done much with the amount of sage brush that was burning, remember the flames were 10-18 feet high a 15mph plus wind, they would not have had enough water to last more than a few minutes putting out enough water to do any good I have fought fires here like this many times, only way to stop them is to remove their source of fuel water works great for mop up and wetting down around a building ect, when it is this dry and 100 degrees a fire unit spraying water does about as much good a P-ing on it, the wall of fire we had they call a fire storm it creats its own wind I sure wish I could have taken pics, this burnt ground does not even begin to show what that fire looked like at the time, I am hoping that some pics will be in our local paper if so I will post them, I am just thankful nothing that can't be replaced was lost, it was a very bad fire but could have been much worse

I gotcha. Two years ago, early spring, the train threw sparks as it traveled through the area. Started a fire every two miles or so for about twenty miles. Kept all the vol. Dept.s busy for awhile. More fires at once than trucks to chase em.
Between farmers disking and the mounted squirt guns, we managed to corral the flames but any kind of stiff wind might have been a different story.

CNT,
I hope you and the 1470 and disk or OK. If this was arson, I hope that the poor SOB's get caught and fined for their stupidity. Is any of this land your hay or small grain fields or your neighbor's. Sorry about the language. But I don't have time for people that are disrespectful or extremely careless around other people's property, especially in this year's drought situation. I hope the best for all farmers affected. Good luck.

luckily all it burned on me was pasture but about 250 on my neighbor was his winter pasture/ hay fields that he had left due to the drought, as to the 1470 and disc I hope I have not done any axle damage to the disc as I was in some very rough country with it and was in 6 th gear haulin butt to stay ahead of the fire, I did get it stopped about 150 yards before it got to my hay fields that I am going to be turning cows into in a week, am very glad I was able to sdtop it when I did

you are so right Bill, they really had no choice but to watch and they had several engines protecting my neighbors house, the abandoned farm less than 1/4 mile north of him is a total loss it really was a team effort i am just so glad to have been able to get to it as soon as I did as I would guess I saved another 800-1000 acres from burning and by then it would have been close to a subdivision about a mile from where I was able to stop it thank GOD cnt

It's a good thing you have a tractor ready to go a a drop of the hat ....
was there a wind to keep it moving ?? grass fires move FAST with a little wind ... don't even ask HOW I know that ... lol ... another story ...

To bad you didn't have the camera ... but nice pictures of the after matter ..

Did your tractor get any burn marks ???

Mark no burn marks but let me just say I was within 3 feet of the flames and had the offset in it when I could and yes there was wind about 15mph with bigger gusts to and it was creating it own wind to sounded like a tornado beside the tractor and the heat was so bad I was afraid it might crack the windows, I had them open as I have no a/c and I can not believe how dang hot it was, when I first was trying to put up the first guard the wind and the fires own wind was moving the fire at a very fast rate it traveled 250 feet in less than a minute

yes the 1470 motor was changing sounds at times, now whether that was due to less oxygen or the higher temps I can't say as I was not watching the pyro and the disc was placing a larger than normal load on it due to sixth and seventh gear and running in tough sod to boot cnt
