I was troubleshooting a rear lift problem. The rear lift would lower very slowly or not lower at all until you turned off the motor.
With the motor off I was loosening the plug/screw on top of the hold valve to see if the lift would go down faster. Went one too many turns the plug, spring and valve came up fast. The spring went up, then down into the rear end. Is it safe to leave it down there or do I need to start taking the rear end apart?

The whole inside on a DB gear case is sort of segmented off. Reason it is so hard to get all the water out of them. IMHO, pretty slim odds it causing any damage even if it does start to wander. Worst case I can see it ends up in the sump by the filter.

You need the spring for the 3 point hitch to work right. Needs to be identical to the one in the bypass valve next to it, not close, but identical. That said if you can find the right spring(Case still lists it, # k24832), there is no reason that spring can't live in the bottom of the axle housing forever.

I doubt you will get it with a magnet, only way I can think of would be to remove the rockshaft and right hand control housing, maybe 8 hours for your first time.

Rate of lowering is adjusted by the knob by your right heel, DBs always lower slow unless there is some weight on them.

Thanks so much. I think I can still get the spring from the Case dealer in the next county. I"ll check on that. Believe it or not my youngest son, 18, dropped it down in there last year. A friend of mine, a retired diesel mechanic, after removing all the parts you just mentioned, fished it out for me for a very reasonable price. His specialty is heavy equipment and Ford tractors. He said he hoped he never saw the inside of anything that looked like that again. So I won"t even tell him this time. I had about decided I"d do it myself if it had to be done. I thought about opening it up since the selector dial is stuck in the lift/height position and it doesn"t appear that the knob at the right heel works either. First, I"ll get the spring. Folks around here aren"t very familiar with DB"s. They"re afraid to tell me to leave it in there. Thanks again for the help!

Get a flex-headed magnet and fish it out. I've seen them about 30" long. (Assuming the spring isn't stainless steel)

Thanks. I've been trying. I'm pretty limited on what I can reach from there. I was so aggrevated at myself for letting it happen I forgot to mention what kind of tractor I have. It's a David Brown 990 Selectamatic (early model). I reckon I'll start removing parts so I can get a better angle. Thanks again.

I have had things happen to me and always the hardest to get at or see at the same time.
Here"s a thought I have used- take a wire such as a coat hanger hold or tape a magnet to wire and go fishing. I keep a few speaker magnets around they are very high strength magnets and usually free from scrapers. I have also used the same with a steel flex wire to the coat hanger wire so I had more manuverability tape them together.
