Just did a complete engine overhaul on a case 630 diesel. I sent fuel injection pump and fuel injectors to get cleaned and checked by Diesel Specialists. I triple checked the timing on all the timing gears, checked the injection pump timing and set at 8 degrees before TDC. The engine starts really easy, it fires as soon as you hit the starter. At idle it runs beautiful, high idle runs very good also. Hook it on a dyno for an hour, puts out 6 hp less than spec and puffs alot of black smoke. Put it in high gear on the road, same thing, black smoke and cant recover rpms. Seems like its over fueling. Took injection pump back in and they tested it and said its in spec. Any suggestions on what else it could be?

Make sure your air cleaner is clean, I had to put new mesh in mine and also make sure it comes up to operating temperature and try adjusting your timing, could be some gear wear not giving you exactly 8 degrees

I always thought all 630s smoked like that. We had a 630 in our area that smoked a lot a high idle. I think the 430,530 and 630 all had the same engine only different settings. My experence has been when I turn an NA diesel up they tend to run clean at lower RPMS and turn dirty at high rpms. The lower hp readings my not be connected to the smoke. Does it have fire out the stack? Starting quick may be good but costing you horse power. I would play with that timing a little and see what happens. May be a little fast.

OOPS. I see you have already checked the injectors. However if adequate air is getting into the cylinder then poor spray pattern seems a likely cause. I would quiz the Diesel Specailsts just what they did or did not do to the injectors. Quiz them about checking the spray pattern. Did they just clean or did they also check the spray pattern?

Also, does the 630 have direct injection or does it have cross port injection? I seem to remember the larger 30 series had cross port injection that used a precombustion chamber. For the precombustion systems, the "fire and brimstone" coming out of the precombustion chamber needs to be sprayed into the cylinder's air uniformly. That depends on the condition of the precombustion chamber's inside surfaces.

The Deere 1010 crawler engine suddenly running good after 2 hours baffles me.

Well all your remarks are very interesting. Mine does the samething. touch the key it's running. High range 4th gear wide-open black-smoke (grandkids think its cool grandad!) push snow white-ish type smoke. Engine total rebuild, 30 year case vet did the job. When asked about the smoke. He said "its the nature of the beast" I know I haven't give any answers just more questions. So when I go to Ron's to BUY HIS PLOW I will put the ole girl on real load and see.God Bless

PDG

I too am anxious to learn what you find. My 631 smokes excessively as well. The injectors were overhauled recently and the tractor dynos above rated hp at 54 hp. It also starts and runs well at all RPM setting, but ithe amount of smoke under a load is excessive. - Joe

If you get it figured out please post again so we know the fix. I have a 1010 Deere Crawler Loader Backhoe with the same pump that does the same thing. Injector pump guy cannot figure it out either. As soon as it starts working it pukes black smoke and looses 1/2 its power. After it runs for a couple hours, it will instantly run great. Double the power and no black cloud. I always thought it was something in the governer, but the pump guy says NO. Do all the 630's have the old style injecters?

Might check the injectors. They might be squirting rather than spraying.
