Case 430/ 470 questions

I just acquired a 470 trans/ rear end , front end and sheet metal. I was thinking of using the rear end in my 430, so I can get rid of the row crop axles. The 470 appears to have the independent pto. Can I just mate it up behind my triple range and call it good?
Or do I lose the triple range and the hand clutch?

The simple answer is no..you can't just mate it up behind the triple range. Your current 430 does not have the hollow shaft that would allow the PTO drive shaft to reach the flywheel, bypassing the clutch. Even if you had the hollow shaft from the clutch through the transmission, the hand clutch assembly would not allow for a constant running shaft from the flywheel to the independent PTO assembly. The latter is why you never see a hand clutch with an independent PTO.

A second possibility would be to swap axles from your 470 to the 430. Why do you want to get rid of the row crop axles? I always thought the row crop axles were more desirable because they gave more flexibility in wheel spacing. - Joe

Got a better look at the sheet metal and it says 430. Its set up for a dry air cleaner/ has a hole in the side of the hood. Dash didnt have a serial number on it unfortunately. Did the 430 have a independent pto? Its got the long lever and different housing.
Wouldnt I need a 2 stage cluch?

I dont like the long axles - they catch on everything when ur trying to mow around stuff.

How does a 8 speed compare to a 12?

Hey Matt

The indépendant PTO was an option on the 430. The standard
PTO had a lever made out of steel rod bent into a loop on the end .
To engage the lever was pulled up over center.

The early independent PTO systems had a long lever that was
positioned horizontally on the right side of the operations station
under the hydraulic levers. To engage it was pulled straight up.

The later independent PTO systems had a vertical lever behind the
operators seat that was pulled forward to engage and pushed aft
to disengage.

If in your shoes, I would mate the rear end you desire up to the
good engine at the bell housing as save a lot of headaches. That
can be done with 4 bolts. The eight speed gives plenty of speed
options. There are not as many slow gears, and road gear is
slower. Slower is a relative term however.... The little triple ranges
risked speeding tickets in some municipalities.....

The hand clutch really is no longer needed with an independent
PTO. The reason the hand clutch was implemented, was to give
the operator the ability to stop the forward (or rearward)
movement of the tractor without stopping the PTO. The
independent PTO allows the operator to do just that.

One issue you might want to consider. The independent PTO
assemblies are normally very reliable on these tractors, but I have
not found one yet (even after a rebuild) that will brake when when
disengaged. The braking system will not completely stop the PTO.
If there is any load against the PTO it usually won't turn. However,
easy turning items like a small Bushhog type mower will
sometimes continue to turn if the unit is raised above the
grass/weeds. You may also have to shut the engine down to hook
up PTO implements. For this reason, I tend to prefer the standard
PTO and hand clutch setup....
