770 at auction

Hello,
There is a nice looking 770 coming up for auction around me in a few months. I would really like to pick this up, but I have a few questions.
1. It is a gasoline engine. How reliable are these? We haven't ran a gasoline engine on our farm sense our DC4 was retired 30 years ago. How feasible is it to swap in a diesel/is it worth it?
2. It is cab-less with a home made canopy. It is possible to put a cab onto it, and how doable is it?
3. What do you think it is worth as is? It has a nice GB 440 loader and looks like good tires. What do you think?

1. I have done the swap, would I do it again, NO.

2. Cab is doable, 970/170 cabs abound in junkyards.

3. The loader and tires are worth as much or more than the rest of the tractor.

My 2 cents is to buy it,, leave the gas engine in it. You won't regret it.

I have a gas engine in my 730 about that size. This weekend I bales 817 bales if small squares with that tractor. It didn't have quite three quarters of a tank when I started. It still has a little more than a quarter tank. I use the 93 octane, and the tractor loves it.

Over the last 50 years or so we have had 2 old Case gas engines about that size 800 and a 730. Can't say enough good about them.

Thanks for the information guys. I probably would not change the engine until I had a problem with it. And if these are strong engines, I probably never will. I was just wondering. This tractor will probably just be used to mow with a 8tf mower, maybe do some hay raking, move some round bales, and maybe a little bit of square baling. We really don't need this tractor for anything specific, but our smallest tractor at the moment is a 4040 JD with about 100hp. I would like to get something a little smaller for odd jobs. What I really would like to find is a 400 lp row crop. That is the first tractor my grandfather bought when he started farming, and my dad grew up on it. But I can not find one anywhere.

Someone did a good job on the canopy. It extends down the sides and forward for good shade. Maybe a tic lower would have provided better shade and not hindered visibility unless you are very tall.

Cabs are for cold wind, and dusty fieldwork. Also, noise control on large tractors. What will you use the tractor for mainly? I find keeping the sun off on a hot day to be the main need. Baling small squares in 105 degrees is not bad under a good canopy. Big rounds are dirty.

Old style cabs and add-ons tend to be "boom boxes". The factory 70 series cab was a good cab with proper rubber mounts for quietness.

I would like to put a 70 series cab on it. I think it would help in the winter when we feed cattle. Also, I just really like to looks of the smaller 70 case tractors with the cabs. How hard is it to put a 70 series cab onto one of these?

Thanks again for all the advice. I have no idea if I will get this tractor, but I do think I will try to bid on it. What would be a good price?

We have a 770 gas without a cab & love it. We mainly plant & cultivate with so we run it about 1/2 throttle. Runs smooth & uses very little gas at that speed. Plowing under full throttle might be different. Manifolds and heads are a little tough to find because they don"t fit anything else. Ours is power shift & I believe some of those parts might also be difficult to find as well because they are unique to this tractor.

Thats a nice looking tractor. Where I live a loader like that mounted on the tractor would raise the price of the tractor about $2000-3000

If that tractor suits you i say buy it.

A good used cab should be able to be found.

The rubber alone is worth some money

Installing a cab is relatively easy if you have an overhead hoist. Revove the fenders and the cover over the fuel tank. The salvaged cab that you find will slide rite down onto the platform and utilize the same bolt holes that held the fenders on. Be sure to get the fuel tank cover for the cab, and be aware that the platform mounts were reinforced on cab tractors, Also, 6 cyl tractors had taller mounts that attached to the rear axles. That should be your only real issues.

Thanks again for all the information guys. I am going to go to this auction and try for it, but the more I think about it, the more I think it will be out of my price range. I really don't need the loader, we already have 2 bigger ones, but it would be handy. I am really just looking for a 50hp tractor to do some mowing with. I would love to find my grandpa's old 400lp, but I have no idea where it went. It was traded for about 30 years ago. But if this goes cheap enough, I will pick it up. All the rest of the equipment at the auction is JD, and there is not much for older case equipment around here, so maybe there is a chance it will go cheap. The auction is not until the end of July, so I have some time to think about it and maybe save up some more money.
