Case D or DC4 starter

Does anyone know of a source for rebuilt starters for a Case D or DC4 tractor? A friend of mine hasn't been able to locate one, and can't seem to get repairs like the bendix drive for his old one. Appreciate any assistance.

There is one on E-Bay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/160-149-Reman-Starter-DC-SC-S-Case-Tractor-R-R-ONLY-/270845502017?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item3f0fa66241

Any good auto electrical shop or rebuilder can get the Bendix drives and springs , there is also a modern rubber cushioned drive to replace the old spring drive, I have a couple new ones that I keep around for my tractors and customers.

There are 2 different starters that I know of for the D series. The early ones had a 13 tooth gear and later ones had 11, if I recall. John Saeli helped me get the oddball 1940 13 tooth unit I needed.

I think the ring gear between the 11 and 13 tooth units are different as well. Worth checking in your books to make sure before you just try dropping a "fits all" one in...

Ken, you are correct and I would hope that one would have the presence of mind to make sure the tooth count is the same, The MAB4105 Autolite should have the 11 tooth drive. The Ring gear is also different as you suspected. My 39 originally had the 13 and when split I changed the ring and went to the 11 tooth drive. The improved rubber cushioned drives are a vast improvement over the old spring drives and the shell with the teeth is replaceable in case of damage by simply removing a snap ring and installing a new shell with gear attached and putting the snap ring back in. As engines were worked up in HP and compression and most old six volt starters were being fed by twelve volt batteries spring life became an issue. the problem is now days that there are knock off foreign made drives that look like the old bendix spring drives but are weak. I have had numerous failures. I can assure you that the drive I recommend is not a "fits all" but a much stronger modern design much superior to the Bendix style drive and designed specifically to replace the old style drive.
