DC Rod Cap Bearing Damage? Weird

Well, I am taking the pistons out tonight. 2 and 3 come easy. 4 comes out easy but when I pull the rod cap off this is what I found.........The crank is not scored or anything. Complete shiny surface. Just this bad spot on the rod cap. Someone said that these are just not replaceable bearings. What the heck do I have to do now?

Flewster, Mic the shaft and send the dimensions as well as the rod to DonL of this forum and he will put new babbit on it and send it back to you ready to install.

That is not exactly new territory to those of us who have done a lot on these engines. Lots of people will try to sell you a used rod but having your rod redone is much preferable to installing some used rod which is not round and has 50 years of wear already on it and possibly a surface that is ready to seperate and chunk out.

How much use is the ol'e girl gonna get? If not much, I wouldn't worry about it. All it will be is a trap for oil. Lightly sand around the edge of the gouge, like a champher. Some bearings used to come with machined trails.

I was kind of thinking that too but I plan on using it qutie a bit. It looks to me like it was that way when they put it together from 45 years ago or how ever long this motor has been together. I do plan on using the ol gal quite a bit though to mow hay and rake and maybe even bale with (the D17 works better for baling though).

Like I said before though the crank looks perfect. No gouges or anything. Just a perfect shiny surface. The pistons are 4" pistons and the sleeves look great. Matter of fact there is no ridge on them and the pistons just popped right out with just a slight push.

I plan on pulling the sleeves to put new orings in and to also clean the block as the total rear of it is filled with rust flakes. Does anybody have a sleeve puller bottom piece or maybe the demintions so I can have one turned. From what I measured it was 4.004" inside the sleeve and had a .103" thick lip at the bottom. Got to measure the total outside diameter this evening inside at the bottom.

That looks to me like just a flaw in the babbitting. probly been that way since new. Most likly had very thin layer that wore off and left the air hole. If it was running good and not knocking I wouldn't worry to much about it.

I wouldn't worry about that, it probably only makes up 2% of your total bearing surface, and it's probably been like that since it was new. Just make sure your clearance is right. That cavity will fill with oil when the engine is running. Engines with splash lubrication like Farmall F series have holes almost that big in them. Plus it's on the bottom, not the top.
