DC Head work

I am going to remove the head for some rework as it has a broken valve spring and needs repaired. It is a 1951 DC with a 1948 motor in it. Standard head.

If it was yours what would you have done to the head while it was off? And the motor for that fact too?

I would not remove the head take old spark plug weld pipe inhole after center is removed fit air compressor hose to plug keep air pressure remove broken spring replace . I have compressed new ( used in my case) spring in vise wired down or compressed installed cut wire if no other way to compress spring. Have done this 4 ot 5 times in last 30 years

On the Farmall Board ;-) I came across another trick to keep valves closed.
Remove spark plug and feed soft (and clean) rope onto cylinder while piston is down. Rotate crank until rope pushes firmly against valve seats.
Haven't used either method so cannot comment on practicality.

Not a bad idea but head has to come off. I put this thing together and it leaked on right side. Re torqued as told and still leaks. Now I have some bubbles in the Radiator and the oil is milky......So I am taking it off and getting it done. Also I plan on doing a complete vaccume of the block as I did not do that when I put together (a real novice I admit) as I was in a hurry to get it runnign before my Grandfather passed away. I would love to resleve it and also put new rings and rod berings but I am no way prepared to do that. I have to replace a couple head bolts too as they were pitted and rusted at the bottom.

Just wondering of a good place to send the head and should I mill it some and/or redo valve guides and seats?

common procedure to replace springs or seals is to use air to hold valves closed. if head must come off for rebuild then the machinist knows the rest. he will check the warpage, valve stem wear and guides, seat wear , spring pressure. and all that goes with the job. the average person does not even know whats involved in a valve job.

I did replace a spring on a 52 sc by using the soft rope and I was able to compress the new spring simply by pushing it down with two wooden dowels ,my wife put the keepers on took less than a min. Cover any open holes were the keepers can migrate into if you drop them & as previously stated keep a magnet nearby. Trim any frayed ends on the rope so you you dont pinch the end between the piston and the sleeve wall. Hope this helps someone.
