6 volt questions for you sparky experts..

My 56 310 roundnose restoration is underway and the dash panel needs new bulbs. Local Auto Parts store? I was unable to get a 6 volt temp sender unit so it has a 12....will it work at all? Partially? I know the 12 volt bulbs will light but not at full brightness. The temp sender is a single wire to the dash gauge. Is a new float type gas tank sender/gauge functional at all with 6 volts if the gauge was restored for 12? I am keeping the tractor original but some things are tough to find Thanks

6V bulbs should be no problem. With a restored dash converted to 12V, sounds like you would be better off converting the tractor to 12v. Only other thing to change is the generator & bulbs. A 12V Gen. of the same vintage will bolt right up.

An electrical temperature sender is a thermistor,
that is, resistor that varies with temperature. It,
therefore, stands to reason that the indicator is
either an ammeter/millimeter. It's possible the new
sender will not provide the proper current to read
correctly. Also, polarity may be a problem but that
can be corrected by reversing the meter connections.
(I’m assuming a –6V system on the tractor and the
new sender is made for +12V system.)

Thanks guys. The starter, solenoid and generator are all new rebuilt in the original 6 volts. The gauges were restored quite nicely by Roger and they are really done well. The bulbs is no big deal and only the fuel gauge and temp are somewhat affected as the speedo and tach along with the ammeter are not affected. The tractor made it 55 years as built and I wanted to try and keep it as original as I could. John, great parts! The steering wheel is perfect!
