David Brown tractor..

Hello all! I have never posted here before. This is my first time on this board..

My dad has a 1971 David Brown Selcto-Matic 990. It is a great tractor...

When he starts it up, you can't just turn the key and go-you have to put a screwdriver on the what he thinks is the negitive wire that is broken to get sparks to turn it over. This 'wire' thing comes out of the starter-we think it was a ground,(neg.) wire that hooked to the frame.

Like I said, this is broken, as there is no wire off of it. Do you know what this is for?

Also, on the solenoid there is a wire that comes in from the battery, I think this is a pos. wire to start it. Anyway, under where that wire comes in, there is 2 nuts-like a wire goes in there. There is nothing there though. My dad and I think that there is a wire that goes from the 2 nuts on the solenoid to the starter, then that wire goes to the frame.

i come from tractor tales....i am Bernies gson kyle on there....but since my grandfather Bernie does not go on this forum, i changed my name so not to confuse people!

i enjoy old tractors, especailly ford. My family lives on a farm in westeren mass and raise almost all of our food here.

I help my grandfather Bernie,(who, btw,can be found sometimes on tractor tales) do hay. I have helped him last year and this year. I enjoy it alot because i like driving his tractors.

Here is a wiring diagram for a 1200, a 990 is the generally same as long as it still has a generator.

The large terminal(5/16 stud) on the end of the starter is grounded to one of the bolts that hold the engine block to the frame by way of a heavy braided cable.

The top big terminal on the solenoid has your + battery cable, one wire that ultimately ends up at the ignition switch, one wire that goes to the voltage regulator(or alternator if converted).

The small spade terminal goes back to the ignition switch and is the one that activates the solenoid.

The bottom big terminal on the solenoid goes into the starter motor.
