930 6-speed question

Hey guys,

I have a 930 6-speed (s/n 8191071).. Supposed to be a 1962.

I don't have a owners manual (the one I have is for a 930 CK)..

Where do I check the rear end oil? I think I have it figured out where to add it, but can't find a "level plug" or anything..

As far as I can tell, my hydraulic reservoir and rear housing are separate compartments (and I have a hard time believing 3 +/- gallons fills up both).

Can anyone tell me where to look? Also, would anyone be able to tell me where I could find a manual, or a number of what I might need and I can go through my local dealer.

Here's a scan from my early 930 trans lube page. You may have to save it to your pictures and enlarge it to read it. There's usually owner's manuals for sale on e-bay.

Thanks. Looks like it's right near the brake pedals/hyd filter (saved the image, but as I zoom it gets blurry on me).. Never really looked there, as I anticipated it to be on the other side (perhaps a little more in the open).

Yes it's just ahead of the hydraulic filter - it's a small pipe plug, takes a 7/16" wrench. The filler plug, along with the one for the hydraulics, is on the upper left side of the trans housing, should be marked. Quite a large pipe plug up there, I think up to 3/4" or so. Take out the small level plug and fill through the large upper plug until it runs out the level plug.

Note this is on the earliest (1960) 930's, I expect later 6-speeds are similar but I'm not 100% sure.

There's a similar small pipe plug for the hydraulic oil on the left side near the hydraulic hoses and pto shield. Same procedure. Mine uses 80W-90 in the rear end and Type A in the hydraulics, later ones may have used all Type A but again, I'm not sure what changes Case made.

Thanks again. It's been raining today so I haven't looked mine over today to see if I see it.

I did the hydraulic oil already the other day, and was thinking I can't recall ever checking the trans/rear oil.. I've had the tractor about 6-7 years now, but I'll bet I haven't put 50 hours on it since I bought it.. And most of them were playing with it behind the house working the bugs out of it.

The manual I have (granted, for a newer 930) calls for hydraulic oil in the rear.. But I'm willing to bet, like yours, I'm supposed to have gear oil in it. The I&T book that came with the tractor makes mention that at a certain s/n the rear and the hyd. pump share the reservoir, but the earlier tractors do not.

You should be able to tell just by appearance what kind of oil is in the rear end. Black and thicker indicates gear oil, Type A would be thinner and reddish. If no oil seeps out when you take out the small plug stick a short piece of wire in, enough oil should cling to it when you pull it out to give an indication. The gear oil gets pretty black, even a different hydraulic oil like TCH (Case) or Hy-Tran would be thinner and lighter colour.
