DC Amp Meter

Quick question on amp meter. I hooked the wire from the generator to the right terminal (as looking from meter face to down through to the back of meter) and the left terminal to the light switch and the battery positive cable. When running the tractor shows about an 8 amp neg charge. I just assumed that the guage was hooked up wrong so no big deal i would change it later. trouble is the battery is not charging. I show 6.37 volts when tractor not running and 6.66 volts when tractor running and at normal RPM's. Could it actually be that the battery is being discharged by a bad regulator? Is my meter hooked up right?

CORRECT hookup is to connect the "HOT" wire from the battery to one post of the ammeter, then the output of the generator AND ALL electrical loads to the other post.

If it reads backwards, swap the wires between the two posts.

You should be "seeing" about 7.4 Volts when the engine is running and the battery is getting charged.

went out tonight and cleaned the reg contacts, the fuse and low and behold it now has 8.3VDC on the battery when engine at operating speed.
