870 quit moving

I was using a Case 870 to swath brome grass last summer, and when I was about half done on a 20 acre field, the tractor just quit moving like it somehow got shifted into neutral.
There was no warning signs of anything wrong with the transmission before this happened.
No forward gears, and nothing when shifting into reverse.

I'm not familiar at all with Case-O-Matic transmissions, and this was my dad's tractor before he passed away.

Anyone have any ideas of what might have happened to cause this tractor to act the way it did? I'm going to have some time to work on it next week, so any ideas on where to start will be helpful.

Thanks,

It is a power shift I'm guessing cause it's not a Case-o matic in the 870 I'm sure. Probably a torque limiter failure, does it have transmission pressure on the dash gage. On the 870 the pump drives off the torque limiter instead of the center of the flywheel as later 70 series do so TL failure shows up as a total loss of system pressure. Most likely the hub has torn out of the limiter plate causing a total loss of pressure (not exactly a first time complaint). An engine/ bell housing split is probably in your future. mEl

Many moons ago, we had a total failure on our 870. Dad was in a total panic, beginning of May, just started tillage, and the 870 was our big horse.

The key on the hub of the left rear wheel sheared, and the casting that holds the wheel center to the axle cracked. Everything looked fine at a cursory glance, it took a 10 year old standing right beside the wheel when he was trying to get her to move to notice the axle was moving but the wheel wasn't.

I agree with Mel but if you have hyd press. It could be the 3 bolts that hold the gear on that drives the trans after the Power Shift. We have seen many loosen then break off allowing the gear and shaft to seperate. This would be a pretty big job so hope its something simple for you. Thad

The transmission pressure gauge is so deteriorated it isn't readable, but the tractor does have hydraulic pressure to the steering and to the implement hydraulic outlets.
I'm no mechanic by any stretch of the imagination, and maybe this is going to be more than I can handle if the tractor has to be seperated.

Ok now that you have hyd press that helps. Start the eng try to put the 4 speed side into gear without pushing the clutch down. If it doesnt grind the gears when you try this its not turning the trans and means it has to be split. It could be the bolts on the gear i said in earlier post most likely. Thad

it's fun being the little kid saving the day. have
fond memories of that myself,
but rue the days when I was wrong and they
listened to me..
